Hey Patrick,

(or anybody else that feels like giving their opinion...)

It's part #10 in this pic - http://www.ronayers.com/fiche/ (http://www.ronayers.com/fiche/300_0298/rear_swinging_arm/rear_swinging_arm.cfm?man=su&groupid=5010&parent=4850)

Assuming proper chain tension, how important is the chain buffer? Mine came loose and now I'm having a hard time keeping it seated properly 'cause the chain keeps grabbing it. Thinking about cutting it off until i can get the bike into the shop this weekend...

I'm not sure about that. Sometimes when you downshift the chain will slap the buffer pretty hard. I'd wrap it with duct tape until you can get a new one.

I wouldn't recommend running without one, over a very short amount of time the chain can groove the swingarm.
