My dad got me my first bike when I was 4. He had been riding since he was 16 and got his first enduro which was his daily for a couple years. My mom wrecked her ninja 250 about 1 year before they got a divorce and he sold all the bikes. (except mine) 8 years later he gets another bike. He is a good rider but shit most of us are. I met up with him and my brother last week to go fishing and i got there, he was gone so was his bike. I walk outa the garage as he pulls up.

the help i need from yall, He never wears gear. :BangHead: how can I talk him into putting a lid on?

I under stand...My dad was the same way until he crashed his electraglide and it hit him in the head while flipping through the air. He was a believer in helmets after that.

A half helmet is better than no helmet and they do look better on cruisers. For his birthday, Christmas or just because he's your dad, buy him a helmet as a gift. Just tell him "Its because I love you."

My dads the same for the most part, it's hard to change they're minds about their riding habits. Not much you can do when your dad is set in his ways.

I've got a few local stories for you. All were cruiser riders.

First one my neighbor. He rode a chopper and only wore the mighty dew rag of protection. He ran off the road into a field going somewhere between 40 to 60 mph. He spent a month in I.C.U. at Ben Taub. Don't know what kind of injuries he had but here's the result. His eyes don't look the same direction. His can no longer ride because his left hand won't operate the clutch more than a few times. He is walking with a cane only. He is not longer able to work.

From what I've heard of the wreck, he mostly slid on his back and his front. I dare say that if he had a helmet, jacket, and pants he'd probably walked away or at least been a lot better off.

Second story is my friend's coworker's husband. He laid his Harley down in the 290 HOV lane. On his way down he realized that he did not have anything protecting his head. So he put his hands ups with no gloves. He ground two fingers off one hand and lost the use of the thumb on the other. He will not be able to ride again or work.

A man and wife were turning a corner here in houston going between 5 to 10 mph when he drug a floorboard and dropped the bike. His wife received a head injury during the fall and died.

A riding buddy of mine came across a guy who went down on a Harley going 20 mph. (Jeans will only slide about 5 feet at 50 mph before wearing through.) The guy ground his butt to hamburger and left a red streak down the road. He also had a bad head injury.

You can make any point you want from these, but basically it happens right here in Houston, and at any speed. A little gear goes a long way. I agree with buying him a helmet as a gift. I know a lot of older cruiser riders go for the modular flip-up helmets in lieu of a full face helmet. I'd recommend that over a partial helmet anyday.

Most of the bike shops around here do not have good cruiser gear. But I found a good selection at Biker's Passion in Clear Lake. It's on Hwy 3 at Dixie Farm Road just across from Ellington Field. It's run by a guy named, Johnny. He hooked me up with good cruiser leathers complete with body armor. If you go, tell him, Jesse sent you.

Id vouch for what Magnaman said, that bikers passion has descent gear that cruiser guys would wear. Safety and stylish if still is one of his reasons for not wearing gear

When I was shopping, Biker's Passion was the only place that had full leather overpants, not chaps. And they have 2 or three different kinds. I went all out and got the Teknic gear. It's 1.2mm to 1.4mm thick cowhide like track leathers. And the cruiser jacket has armor in it and the pants have armor pockets as well. I've upgraded everything to CE armor. Good stuff.

He also has non-armored stuff too which is still better than nothing. ;)

I will be hitting that store soon myself. You should be able to find something for your old man there.

Cool. You guys be sure to tell Johnny that Jesse sent you. I'm sure he'll have a wisecrack about that. :icon_bigg I've gotten to know him pretty well during all my accessories/gear shopping.

I always try to buy my gear from the shop where I tried it on. Sure I can probably get it cheaper on-line, but making sure it fits the first time is worth the little bit of extra money. Plus Johnny has been selling motorcycle accessories for 20 or 30 years now so he has a good amount of experience.

The only thing I can say is you may find his helmet selection a little bare. But his cruiser leathers and accessories are plentiful -- for both men and women.

Don't know what side of town you are on, but there is a motorcycle shop on Shaver in Pasadena that has a really good selection of helmets, particularly for you sport bike riders that prefer the full-face helmets. They also carry some really awesome looking half and three quarter helmets which are preferred by cruizer riders.

Personal tidbit on the cruizer riders who don't wear helmets. Most of our friends don't wear helmets, although most of them have very expensive helmets they could wear. I've always worn a helmet when I ride, but not for the reasons you would think. I had stage 2 melanoma removed from my forehead, so I have to stay completely covered up to ride during the day to keep out of the sun. Let me tell you, it gets flippin hot!!! However, I still wear my helmet with a tinted face shield. Since we bought the Ultra a little over a year ago that has all the bells and whistles with the stereo and intercom system, hubby wears his helmet when we ride together so we can chat while cruizin down the freeway. We purchased three-quarter helmets so the intercom system works, plus it gives me the sun coverage I need, especially with the tinted face shield.

Our best friends were seriously injured on their bike while up at ROT last summer. Suffice it to say, being their second time to go down, they wear helmets now, albiet a half helmet, I guess a half helmet is better than no helmet.

As far as covering up the rest of their body while riding, I still can't beleive I see so many chicks cruizin on the back in shorts and sandals -- talk about incredibly stupid!!!

You're not kidding. Just Google for the "Road Rash Queen" She had a helmet, sweatshirt, and capri pants when she fell. Now she's... Well she's missing some parts.

I wear leathers 75% of the time and a lid maybe 25% of the time. Each of us takes personal responsibility for themselves when they take the kickstand up. To each his own. Ride how you want to ride. If your dad has been riding that long then I am sure he knows the consequinces of not wearing gear. You can try buying him a helmet like me dad did for me but get confused when it sits collecting dust in the garage while your dad is out riding. People ride, slide, and die. Thats the way the world works. If you really want him to be safe then take away all his keys, bike and car, and lock him in a plastic bubble.

I'm not trying to be harsh .. im just saying .. when its your time its your time .. all the gear in the world can't change that.

I couldn't disagree with that more. That implies pre-destination, fate, and the lack of free will or choice, but I'm not going to debate that here because it's already recently been debated in a thread that is now locked. :confused1 :hs:

In addition to the gear we've previously discussed, Clayton, I highly recommend the book, "Proficient Motorcycling". I just started reading it and it has a lot of great information in it about minimizing risk and surviving street riding. It also provides some good thoughts about the common attitudes among motorcycle naysayers and riders who become statistics. The author of the book has been riding daily for more than 40 years now and written for a number of moto publications.

You may want to get the book for your dad before gear. If he learns anything from it, he'll be buying the helmet and gear on his own. And that's always better than politely pushing it on him. Maybe you can go through it with him if you don't think he'll read it on his own.

I think everyone can learn something from this book, especially with the recent deaths as of late. I found it ironic that the book even opened with an accident very similar to the recent bike collision tragedy on Motohouston.

Whatever ... to each their own. But I promise you 1 thing .. we all die. Naked, street clothes, or gear ...

"You may want to get the book for your dad before gear."

Good idea. Allow him to make his own decision without costing a bunch of cashola.

If you ever seen someone with a head injury you would gear up every time you go out. i have seen a dude that slipped on a 2 foot ladder and now has to live (if that what you call it)in a home for ppl with head injury's. he was smart made good money had a wife kids now he at got shit some time don't even know who he is. Its sad to see.

I live on 1097 and i get to see a lot of bikes drive by most Cruisers have no gear on most all sports bikes have at the lest a led on most have more but that is just what i see
