I've used mobil 1, and bosch filters on my bike. no problems yet.

i think the article is suspect. the guy says the only reason he did the reasearch is cause he rides, not that he makes any money off filters...but there is an ad to buy these pureone filters off of amazon right in the middle of the article...

interesting topic though... ive given it alot of thought. id have to think OEM is best or at least plenty good enough.

reason i think this is that a great majority of racers/stunters/mechanics that i know tend to prefer OEM when it comes to clutches and brake pads. while its true OEM stuff is alot more expensive, (more than its worth) its still the best. if you want the best you may have to pay more than its worth.

for example, shoei. is an x-11 worth $600-$700??? worth 4 time as much as say a decent $150 helmet?!?! (say a KBC TK-8) on one hand i have to say hell no, but on the other hand if i had the money id still get one.

if people who know peformance stick with OEM for clutches and brakes, id have to guess the quality of OEM filters is also a cut above aftermarket. all speculation, but it makes sense to me.

Most companies like Honda don't make thier own filters. They send the specs to a manufacturer then stamp 'Honda' and a high price tag on them.

To me, OEM simply means that the part matches factory specs and that the factory has tested their product with that particular part.

I've used Hi Flo and K&N for years with good results.
I've seen literally thousands of engines torn down over the years and although it's subjective, they've done their job well.

While his article is interesting, he doesn't really quantify his "findings" and IMO, only changing your filter every 8000 miles is asking for trouble.

My dad had a saying; "oil and filters are cheap, engines are expensive."
I change mine frequently and use the above filters with good oil, and have never had any issues.

I had an engine builder come speak at the Texas DSM meet one year who talked about oil filters on cars. He was an engine engineer for Chrysler and he had done an extensive study on the internals of oil filters cutting open new ones and used ones and well......let's just say I won't buy the orange Fram filters EVER.....there's a reason they're so cheap.

I stick to Mobil 1 or PureOne or sometimes the high end Fram extended guard filter if nothing else is available.

I only use Wal-Mart ST7317's.

I have physically cut open many oil filters and the ST7317 is as good or better than most others. This is not to say that there are no oil filters better than the ST7317, but at a minimum it is definitely a lot better than the Yami OEM [read: denso] oil filter. And better than stock is good enough for me!

But I'll let everyone know as soon as my motor grenades from not using stock Yamaha OEM filters... [grin]

ETA: (I too would never use a Fram oil filter! <--- best marketed 'crap' in the industry)

Oil filters and everything else is all in matters of opinion. What you pay is what you'll get.

damn, in galveston all i can get my hands on are the fram filters, i got 2 left but after i used them up i'll start with k&n filters. Thanks for the heads up guys.

I am with Kozmic here. The Walmart ST7317 fits most spin on filter bikes, costs about $2.50 per filter and works.
If anyone would like to see the internals of a stock Kawi filter and the ST, let me know and I will show you. THe same company that makes the Mobil One filters makes the Walmart one. Good and cheap.
Here is a link to the internals of a BOsch, Mobil One and Walmart Filter. All of them come with synthetic filter media and anti drainback valves.

Be careful w/ that statement. There are 2 filters that fit a ton of different bikes. The 6017 anf 6018. (I am sssuming that the ST7317 = 6017) The Fram #s are PH6017 & PH6018 They are nearly identical, but they have different thread pitch. If you get them wrong, you run the risk of jacking up the threads on your motor...:icon_thum
