Perforated leather, textile or mesh with leather reinforcements. That is what I would look at.

I just bought a mesh with perforated leather shoulders and arms, and hard CE armor. I'll report as soon as I can get my hands on it next week.

Nah to lazy I'll sell locally or keep it in a closet for when I need it. It's good gear especially when compbined because they zip together. Would suck to have the jacket slide up on you when on the ground:eh:

Again, gear is good very good

I have/had a Spidi textile jacket. Dont know the model though. It had great ventilation and was made very well. The fit was also pretty nice.
Battle tested too. Held up very well.

Just look for whats comfortable and for quality. Look for good stitching, good armor, good fit etc.

to anyone who was interested (RacerX)

I got my Cycleport Kevlar-Mesh jacket yesterday. I thought I was going to have to wait 6 weeks for a custom made size, but they had my size in stock! Havent worn it riding yet, but I tried it on. Good fit, feels a little akward at first. I wear leather, and the mesh doesnt feel as snug. There is armor everywhere (chest, back, elbow to wrist, shoulders) but not the hard kind. Wayne, the owner, doesnt believe in hard armour. He uses high density foam sandwiched between softer, lower density foam. The kevlar feels pretty damn tough, and is sort of rough on your skin on the jacket interior, but not uncomfortable. I know this thing will breathe great in hot weather. I could blow on the jacket, and feel my breath through the jacket.

There is a reflective 2" strip on the back and the backs of both arms. There is a expandable section near the underarms to allow for a comfortable fit when in riding position (arms out in front of you).

So far, it seems worth the dough. I have already read many testimonials about how they hold up on crashes. Studies show the tear strength and abrasion resistance of the kevlar is better than leather.

sorry to jack the thread, but maybe you could use this info

I wouldn't be too confident in that thing. Kevlar is just a buzz word, I don't know how much good it will do you in a crash. Lots of leather suits use Kevlar blends (ie Keprotec) in the stretch areas (inner arms, crotch) which I believe is similar and you DON'T want to slide on that stuff. I have, and I've got the scars. If it's for low speed stuff around town I understand, just hope you slide on the armor.

let alone it's custom made to your size.

You're free to believe whatever you like, but I really hope the guy never has to slide down the road very far wearing it. Stretch Kevlar is garbage in terms of abrasion resistance, you couldn't pay me to ride in it. The mesh is probably even less appropriate for protection. It's most likely no worse than other textile gear though, so like I said if it's just for slow speed stuff around town it's a calculated risk.

Here is the more long winded answer if anybody cares. In Europe they have performance standards for leathers like we do for helmets. Here is a brief summary:

http://www.roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/88.html

The point you want to look at is that in comfort zones, you need to last 1 second in the abrasion resistance test. In the critical zones where you're likely to slide, you need to last 4 seconds. Hideout, a UK manufacturer of CE certified (badass) leathers, uses double layers of Kevlar/Keprotec just to pass the comfort zone 1 second abrasion:

http://www.hideout-leather.co.uk/folders/custom_designs/technical_specifications/page_2.htm

In essence, it has about 1/4 or some similar fraction of the abrasion resistance of proper leather. You need 2 layers just to pass the minimum CE requirement, and the Motoport stuff is one layer I think. A lot of suits have a layer of Keprotec in the inner arms, I slid on mine when my sleeve rotated and it wasn't pretty.

So yes, do your research. Make whatever compromises you find reasonable, everyone will be different.

nosquid, iirc, the keprotech material is acutally only about 25% kevlar...i think a full kevlar material would survive better.

NOsquid
04-26-2007, 12:22 AM
Yes Keprotec is about 1/4 Kevlar, but at any rate, the Motoport stuff is just a stretch Kevlar blend too, mostly lycra/nylon. I'm not sure how well 100% Kevlar actually works in motorcycle clothing.

like RacerX has said, I haven't heard a single negative from guys who have crashed in this suit.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80138&highlight=motoport+kevlar+impressions

Plenty of info from happy customers there

Stronger seam construction than anything out there. The only potential negative I see is a high speed slide might burn your skin. I'd rather get a little burn than have my jacket bust at the seams, or burn a hole in the jacket itself.

I've read those threads, Wayne strikes me as a used car salesman, personally.

Anyway as I mentioned earlier I've slid on Keprotec (stretch Kevlar), it's not worth a damn in my experience. The CE standards seem to back this up. You can hope that a Motoport label makes a difference if you want, but in the end it's similar material.

similar. I'm not selling the product, so its all good. You are welcome to your opinion. I personally trust the product, and will wear it. It's not the label I trust, its the material.

Their stretch Kevlar probably is Keprotec. Unless you think they're making a blend in house that's a few percent more kevlar or nylon or spandex, and that Schoeller wouldn't be all over their ass for it. According to Motoport, the air mesh is much less abrasion resistant than stretch Kevlar.

I'm not telling you it's any worse than the average mesh jacket, just don't expect too much out of it. It's slow speed commuting gear IMO. I think people have grand expectations when they see "Kevlar."

I have two alpinestars one textile and one leather. The textile is the thick kind (tstunt) and its confortable, very well padded and not lightweight at all when compared to joe rockets light ones. For riding in the summer its good and I crash tested it at about 25, no problem at all other than some stains.

The leather one is a TZ1 and its comfortable as hell but will be hot during summer.

If you have some time and luck on ebay you can get em cheap. Textile I bought new from around 180, leather one i got lucky and got it in mint shape for about 170, after a good 6 months of looking.

Both are worth the money. There are some lighter fabric ones that feel like a long sleve tshirt - must be confortable - but they will probably protect like one.
