Since houston's hot weather is already here, I was wondering how many people wear a mesh jacket vs perforated leather?
For those who wear mesh, what other protection do they wear along with it?

Both, I use a mesh jacket when putting around but wear perforated full leathers for weekend rides, track days and TMGP.

I've got a Tourmaster Textile with the padding in the shoulders/elbows/back. It keeps me cool with all the layers removed, and dry with the rainproof layer in.
Don't have any experience with leather though. I imagnine it'd be hot?

I wear an tourmaster coaster II, pretty hot at the lights, but once moving I was okay. Not sure if I'll be saying the same though when the true summer weather comes.

I used a mesh last year, it was nice even when I had stopped. My mesh had elbows, shoulders and back pads. Yah the mesh will have it's safety limitations, but it is better than falling with nothing!

I've got a Joe Rocket Textile with pads, its not too bad as long as you're moving.
Leather is going to be hotter I'd think, especially cause most of the leather jackets you see are black. If you go with leather try to get the lightest color possible. (i.e. white, red, blue, etc.....not black)

I have both, prefer the leather over the mesh but if Im just making a quick run somewhere then I use the mesh but If im on the hwy/freeway or anywhere longer than a 10 miles drive I use the leather. I just trust it more if I go down. But yes it is hot as hell from April to October!

Does a low speed tumble count? Taking a turn at about 30, got scared, touch the brakes and ended up on the road. Was wearing my mesh and got a hole up into the shoulder. I came away fine, but seeing how easy the jacket tore was a little disturbing. My leather jacket is much more heavy and makes me feel much more protected ... in sure it's just in my head ... but oh well.

I'd expect that mesh wouldn't protect you very well if you go down...

Most good mesh products are good for one crash it seams. While good leather will last you for a few and can usually be stiched back up afterwards. Of course you have to note the word good in my statements.

I've been down around 60 in a mesh, no rash or bruises but the jacket was toast.
Brandon who works for me had a wheelie go bad on him on the Hardy Toll Road at 110 with a mesh jacket on, he didn't get any rash either.
The jacket is hanging up at our shop, it's toast but it did it's job.
Obviously leather will give the best protection, but few of us are disciplined enough to wear leather year round, let alone in August when it's 100 degrees.
Either way, make sure you buy a quality jacket with CE armor, and that it fits well.

I use both but mostly leathers. If wearing mesh(or leathers) always have a back protector under the jacket

all i have for now is textile w/ce armor, i've heard it does fairly well in crashes but thankfully i haven't had to put it up to the test yet
From time spent racing I can't feel comfortable in anything but leather.
IMO, YRMV - a good perf jacket like Vanson with perforation EVERYWHERE flows the same air as the mesh I've tried.
Hell, in August it's hot when wearing nothing but your BVD's!

I wear perf. leathers year round. Only time I am uncomfortable is the winter. Too much air flow and I freeze.

I've got a mesh and non perforated leather. I use the leather for the colder months and the mesh for the warmer months. I have tried the leather on a warm day and swore that I would never do it again.
I have not had perforated leather. Although I would like to try it and see.

Perforated leather! It's alot easier to take a shower when you're done riding than to put skin back on...
However, if you're just city cruising, I can see how a mesh would be just fine...

Your right about that, I have had 3 Joe Rocket mesh jackets so far, they are cheap and do a decent job of protection. Destroyed one on a 30mph mechanical lowside. The other one went through an 80mph tumble, one hole was worn into the left arm and I only had rash there. I have a leather jacket but it is too small now because I got it when I was 16. Only major injuries I have gotten is a severly sprained ankle from not wearing my boots and a broken collar bone from landing wrong. If you get a mesh jacket and go down expect to replace it. It is better than nothing though!

For what its worth...Went down on a slow tumble & the mesh was fine otherwise I would have had a rash from hell, cause I slid on my shoulder!
Cooler? In H-town if you was to ride naked you would still have a sweaty a$$!!:keke:

My recent ditch excursion has gotten me thinking about this. I used to wear mesh for the summer months, but I know it won't hold up as well as leather to abrasion.
So I shopped around and found one with leather shoulders and arms, and hard CE padding. I am going to see how it works out but for the money it looks like cheap insurance.
Made by the same people as my jacket that did a fine job when I tested it out last week... :laughing6
