not really looking to polish them to a mirror finish... just want to bring back the original satin-y look of the rims...

i've tried soaps/cleaners... and steel wool...

still have (what looks like) splotches of calcified (sp?) water stains ALL OVER them...

just the lips or whole rim ?

just the 1 1/2" inside of the lip of the rim...

the center of the rim itself is ok... it has a steel look to it... so stains don't show there at all... but on the rim... you can clearly see tons of white calcificied water stains...* :'(

sorry... the packaging the steel wool was in - is lonnng gone...

there's different grades?... d'oh... sorry again... i didn't know that one...

so 320 sand paper wouldn't be too harsh?... or should i find the toughest steel wool out there first?...

i'm such a noob!... ???

At first 320 will "cut" a bit, then eventually will all smooth out and leave a satin finish, but it will still stain in the future, may wanna consider a clear coat or clear powder coat afterwards to seal in the satin look and prevent future calcium deposits from leaving their mark........

yes Steel wool comes in a wide variety of textures. 1, 2, 3, 4, 0, 00, 000, 0000 #0000 being the finest finish avail

A good way to fix it for good would be to strip the wheel with a wire wheel or bead blaster, then paint it with some rustoleum satin series paint. Its what alot of hot rodders use on there flat black paint jobs, because its a fairly tough paint. 8buck a qt, or like 2.5-3.5 for a rattle can.

Will be the same process with platics...??? I'll like to try to paint the fuel tank and the fenders in my bike "flat black".

Zapata, Paint stripper on the tank for best results, or just a scotch brite pad to scuff it up good for a quick paint, Primer and then flat black.... PJ-1 makes a flat black, kinda expensive for the amount you get, or use a tall can of rustoleum flat black, as for the plastics, good old fashioned sandpaper and elbow grease, DO NOT use stripper on plastics, it will melt your plastics.

Lol, I totally left out the primer stage. Rustoleum also makes an automotive grade primer for about two bucks a rattle can. IMO, the grey is the softest to sand, and makes a nice layer to top coat after nocking it down with some 600grit.
