Hey all, I'm not use to riding in Texas heat yet and thought I should get a camel pack before it is too late and I get heat stroke while riding. Anyone know of a good place to get one?

Ive always wondered if any leathers have a camelpack built into a speedhump, or a speed hump that you can use as a backpack or somthing..

Go and pick them up at a surplus store they are usually alot cheaper there than academy or sun/ski sports. gander mountain etc. But any outdoor store shold have one.

cycle gear usually has some also. check out the website for camelpak. they make dozens of versions. my advice is get either the smallest one or a big one like the h.a.w.g.
i have a m.u.l.e. that i take on trips to corpus. the 3 liter pack is wayyyyyyy more than i need for a 4 hour ride. if i actually drank all that i would spend more time stopping for piss breaks than i would just to have a soda while getting gas. the bigger ones are nice just fo rthe cargo factor.
otherwise get a tiny one with a 1.5 or 2 liter capacity like the skeeter or whatever, the classic one is really good too. it sounds like thats all you need if you just want it for daily city riding.

on my last ride to corpus i had my pack (which i also got at cycle gear) filled with ice and water, under my jacket, and it actually kept me cooler....but i use my pack all the time...curing a hangover, mtb races, sitting on the couch, but the better half won't let me use it at dinner.

Filling the pack with mostly ice and a little water on summer rides is great - sipping water throughout the day is much better for you than downing a bottle at a stop.
Keeping the water cold helps regulate your body temp, too. I've gone through a 70oz pack two or three times on a 200-mile ride.

NO!
Adding things to the water will only make for some fuzzy water/juice the next time you use it. I have only used water in mine, and it works great. I can take it off after a ride and not worry about it growing something... :eek3:

i use mine at least 4-5 times a week (mostly cycling, which i do a lot)...cleaning is simple...drain, rinse, wash (i use a bleach-water combination), dry (i place mine in the strainer with an egg beater inside, with the bite valve off the straw and the fill lid open).
EDIT:i don't always wash it, but i always rinse and keep it dry in between uses. Even if you use just water, there's a potential for nasty growth if you don't keep it dry or store water in it for along time

yeah .. i put a little bleach in mine too... with the water.. keeps growth down and helps clean out my pipes too:eek3: :keke:

As far as cleaning goes, denture cleaner tablets are the bomb. In addition if you store your bladders in the fridge with water they stay nice.

hey is your mule the newer or older version? the newer one has the little dealio for your headphones cord to poke through and a pocket for the player.
i allready have the older style mule, and i love it, but i wish i had the newer one. if you have the newer one i might buy it and sell mine...haha...
what color is yours?

Long rides my man, long rides! Texas is damn hot and I'm not use to sweating out 4 lbs of water (weighed myself after a full Saturday of riding). Figure I might as well add as much as I lose right? No need to get heat stroke and fall off my pretty bike.

Found the best way to work it. Put on the camel-pack full of ice, then jacket, then backpack. The camel pack is like an air conditioner, when the heat builds up the ice melts and viola, water! Fits good and I drained it twice last weekend riding, just got ice at bathroom/gas stops! This thing is a must if you sweat a lot and are not use to the heat/humidity.
