What's a good bike to start with.. I'm looking at the R6s. I want a sport bike and will probably get a 1000 later on. As far spending money, where should I go for insurance and how much to set aside for gear? Thanks.

start with something smaller, like a 250 or 500. s for insurance, if your record is good, try Statefarm

Do you have any experience on a motorcycle?

11-11-2006, 08:28 AM
Never rode and already planning on goin on up to a liter huh?
Ride some first, then decide if your gonna go on a liter.
Take the MSF course, ride a small bike for a month or two before you jump on a suepr sport bike.
Try ninja ex250 or 500, or suzuki gs500~

Well, here we go again..Let me stop right here. I started to ignite the blow torch on this guy but ignorance is somtimes mistaken for stupidity so in the interest of compassion I will subdue myself. Short answer is get a smaller bike to learn on, one you dont mind laying down. Any used Ninja or Sv 650 wouuld be great because they are VERY easily resold in almost any condition. Any newer 600 four cylinder sport bike will out run and out accelerate anything produced only seven or ten years ago. Without a properly experienced pilot these things will get a new rider killed faster than he or she knows what happened. Not to mention repair costs for the bike are MUCH higher. I can hear it now.." I'll take it easy until I bla bla bla..." Dont get a bike because you think the BIKE is cool. Get it because you want to learn to ride. Then get a bike that suits your needs. Don't become a statistic. Your family will miss you and our insurance costs will go up.

Im not going to discuss this again. if your serious about learning opinions, and are not going to go off and do whart you want, then read this thread
http://www.motohouston.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19336
You really should read it. he states that he is going to get a R1 as his first bike because he doesnt wanna start small, we all tell him no, and give valid reasons why. around page 9 he says he buys it, and promptly that weekend wrecks because he doesnt know how to handle a liter.

+1. 18 pages for you to read.
Just start small. You have the rest of your life to ride, no need to go to the top tier straight out.
Be safe brother.

BTW, yes, I did start on a 250, and yes, I own a 1000, and yes, I would much rather have a 600. Hows that for you?
(but I do like my 1000, its a bit fun :hs:) just start small, if you cant be man enough to get a 250, then get a 500 at least or a SV650.

Also, the days of an R6 or GSXR600 being beginner bikes are over! Things 600s are so small, light and extremely powerful they can be just as unforgiving as a literbike.

250 will teach you a whole lot more about riding than any other bike. Plus, they're fun fun fck around on once you know how to ride it

well first of all, yeah I know u've heard it.. I'm not planning on racing it anytime soon.. like until i can get a liter. I'm looking into a bike because of commuting cost for one, traffic is another. It's much easier to ride sidestreets with a bike than an integra. I was looking into a 600 gxr or R6 mainly becuase it is a smaller bike than the testosterone filled Hayabusa or the ZX10R that I really want later on. I'm more looking towards cruising, enjoying the winter wind for now. Actually probably for a long time. Would a 250 be sufficient for freeway use? or am I going to be subdued to riding the feeder because of the lack of power to keep up the speed limit. I have experience on a dirtbike. But that's nothing compared to a sport bike I think. It's like someone that drove a go kart from celebration station wants to get a 350Z and go straight race. Only difference in a bike is you have no airbag or any sort of caging to protect from a crash. I figured I'm going to keep the car that I have and just ride sidestreets to start with. I work in a hospital, so I see these guys all the time and had an earful of recommendations. I've never been told to get a 250 though.
falxzzr
11-11-2006, 10:16 PM
250 CAN do it, but if you want to feel a little safer on freeway like everyone has said, get a sv650 or a ninja 500 or gs500.. hell i saw 2 sv650s for sale used today at good price.
Vandals
11-11-2006, 10:16 PM
250 will do over 100mph. yes its fine to ride them on houstons freeways.
a 600 will spit you off just as fast as a 1000 or anything above.
Get what YOU want, not someone elses opinion. In the long run, you will prob end up doing that anyway, regardless of any input you receive here. I had never thrown my leg over a bike in my entire life, until I bought my first one, a 929. I also have alot of respect for my bike though and I have not had any problems yet.
Vandals
11-11-2006, 10:19 PM
besides, 250s are better on gas than a 600.. and once you know how to ride them, they are really fun to come into turns at 70,maybe downshift once and never have to touch the brake and fly through the corner past all the 600s

my 250 has been mechanically maintained since the day i bought it, every oil change has been with motul 3000 (best oil for the bike) and if you need any other info about it lemme know

well I can get my hands on it whenever your ready if he still has it like I said it needs a little work to make street pretty other than that it runs good and is ready to stunt just add crash cage and 12 bar but it does have a clean title new pilot powers and tank is perfect tail is perfect the only issues are the plastics and the bent mount where the sliders go oh and radiator but that stuff can be found on ebay fairly cheap. remember its a 03 for $2,500

I wanna see if it's cleaner than Gix's.. if not.. my friend would get it.. we need 3 bikes in total.. so.. as of not seeing urs.. i get gix's.. and my 2 friends would battle it out for urs and the zx6 from dragger.

yeah, like i said, theres an ass print dent on the tank, and a cell fone pint, but its not really noticible unless int he right light. Couple scratches on the upper fairing, but they will buff right out ( havent had the chance to do it yet.) And yes, cash only. the bike currently has 13,XXX miles, all to and from school/work everyday and it being my only mode of transportation since i bought it. Ive had the oil changed in it every 1,500miles or less with the best synthetic oil there is for the bike. Kepy it nice and clean and garage kept.
Right now, it had red pinstripe accents that i was experimenting with, they peel right off if you dont like it.

What's a good bike to start with.. I'm looking at the R6s. I want a sport bike and will probably get a 1000 later on. As far spending money, where should I go for insurance and how much to set aside for gear? Thanks.
i just started riding about 2 months ago and was also faced with the delema as to what kind of bike to start with. i chose an 02 GSX-R 750. i bought one that has been laid down cause its almost inevidable, your going to drop the damn thing sooner or later. i've droped it a couple times and when it happens, i just step back and laugh at the stupid thing. a friend of mine started riding about a month after me and he decided to go do it baller style and buy a new cbr600. well last week he was backing up and lost his footing and droped it. now had he bought a older bike or something already droped, he wouldn't have cared it but instead he devalued his bike by $1,000. as for engine displacement, i would say get whatever size you feel confidet about be it a 250 or a liter bike. as long as your not a complete dumb ass and you can keep your hand out of the throttle, you should be fine. the only experience i had with 2 wheels is i rode dirtbikes a little growing up and i got 2 mile standups down on my gixxer after only about a week. my girls dad bought a ninja 250 for his girlfriend and she say it takes all that things got just to keep up with traffic. only thing i can suggest is ride some friends bikes and see which one you feel comfortable with. just know your riding capabilities and don't be in a rush to acceed them. good luck and be safe out there homie.:icon_thum

you should ride a 250 for a few hours, guarantee you'll have fun fckin around on it. especially since theres no weight to slow down coming into turns, you can just lean it over, and take the corner at your choice speed.. plus its fun to whoolie them and watch people go "WTF did he just stand up that ninja250!??!!"
