Hi there, have a problem that started today during lunch. Bike is a 2001 zx7r with 32k miles. I've never had a problem until now. Bike started to knock/shake during acceleration. Don't think its the motor because with clutch held in, I can rev it without no problem. During 1st and 2nd gear the knock is loud and hard, regardless of how smooth the acceleration is. Once I get to 3rd and up, the knock is not as hard/loud, but you can still feel/hear it. Also as long as I don't accelerate to fast, it won't do it. Any ideas of what it may be. Need bike for main transportation for work. Sucks, because I was ready to ride tomorrow to G-town from PP1's 10am ride. Thanks for any/all help too.

The earlier the better, if something that simple, hopefully still make the ride. Going to go outside to check the teeth and see how much slack their is in the chain, post in a minute.

Their is alot of slack in the chain. I can move it up and down almost 2inches. The rear sprocket looks like maybe the teeth are alittle worn down and maybe slipping some when under pressure. I do have a rear stand, is it easy to tighten the chain or do I need to go to a dealer?

if the teeth are too worn i woulnd't ride if the chain slips off at high speed you could be in serious trouble. if it just needs to be tightenen then just tighten. remember to loosen the axle nut first. before oyu start messing wihtthe adjusters.

Do you know if a gsxr-1000 sprocket would fit on his bike?
I'm not sure what the difference would be for different sprockets/bikes..

Ok, need to replace the rear sprocket, can someone explain to me the difference between a 520, 525 and 530 setup. The Kawi dealer I stopped by to see a rear sprocket said that my bike is stock with a 525 which is a unusual size. They said that most bikes now come with 520. They recommend a 530 setup so that if later I wanted to change sprockets for stunt or quicker acceleration, the 530 can handle it. What the hell are they talking about?

did they say anything about dual viscosity blinker fluid?

you need to see what kind of chain you got on there. it comes with a 530 i think if the previous owner put a 520 on it you have to get a 520 sprocket and vice versa.

The dealership said it was all stock w/525 setup. Which is better out of the 520/525/530 systems?

530 will last a billion times longer, at the sacrifice of 1-2 hp. 520 will give you an extra 1-2 horsepower, in return for the lifespan of a mosquito.
I'd go with either 525 or 530.

I rolled with that same bike with engine mods and a 520 chain and the chain lasted like 2 years.

That means your going too slow :P
hahahaha, you know I'm kidding. I've never had a 520 chain to know, thats just what I've heard, having tried both kinds, which would you prefer?

So higher the better? I'm not lookn for more power, just longer lasting gear. Anyone know the best teeth set up. Maybe something with a little more quickness too it. I found on the internet that the bikes stock gearing is 16/43 and for a 3.0 ration, it should be 15/43 for best performance.

I like stock front with 2 up in the rear. or maybe even three up. you still can't go wrong with the 520 though.

So if I just replace the rear sprocket with another 525 sprocket, I won't have to replace any other part right?

If your rear sprocket is worn that badly I'd replace the whole set.
I'd stay with 525 stock though.
Charles / Paniro is a fanatic for maintenence, which is why his 520 setup lasted so long.

HW,
I just picked up the RK chain and sprocket kit from Patrick like last week. I went stock rear and down one tooth up front. And yes, replace the chain and sprockets at the same time. The kit was jst under 200 with MH discount and that includes tax.

Ha Ha, funny you should ask....My clutch plates are FRIED. I need to replace all the steel and fiber cluth plates (13 of 'em total) sometime this week. I haven't had a chance due to moving and other crap in my life, but plan on having it up and running this weekend (if I can get to MU tomorrow). I can tell you this though....It looks nice...really nice. Shiny siler sprocket with a shiny gold chain.:laughing6

Too much slack on your chain can cause damage to your gears. You might have chipped or broken teeth on your gears.

Ok, ordered parts, should be here friday, anyone not busy sat and interested in helping me put them on. I'm going to a 530 setup with 15/43 set up. From what I was able to figure out, hard part is the chain. Any clues?

From what I was able to figure out, hard part is the chain. Any clues?i use air to take the front sprocket off rear sprocket is self explanatory might want to check the cush drives while you're back there. cut the old chain off route it back through then make sure you put the clip for the master link the right way adjust then roll. all else fails hollar at me.

Ok got my parts this morning. Got Vortex Sprockets and Tsubaki Chain. Too keep cost down (have to buy new rear tire also) gonna have to install sprockets/chain myself. Just loosen old sprockets and install new ones. Old chain is rivet type. so use some bolt cutters to cut it off. Install new chain with spring clip. Adjust then roll right. Also the new chain is 110 links. Not sure about size of old chain but stock was 16/43, new set up is 15/43, how will this change affect the links?

Just wanna make sure that I won't have to alter/modify the new chain to make it fit.
you may need to cut the chain

Call me if you have questions. I just did this last weekend. If you don't have an air ratchet....with the old chain still in tact and semi tight....put the bike in neutral and have someone else (preferably someone with some weight and muscle) press on the front and rear brakes while trying to break the nut loose. Also, there is a "lock washer" behind the nut that "folds" over the nut to keep it from coming loose while the bike is being operated. Make sure to use a hammer and chizzel or flat head screwdriver to "unfold this washer". Make sure when you install the nut back on the front sprocket that you fold it back over. I wouldn't want to see what happens if that front sprocket comes loose while you're doing a high rate of speed. hit me up if you have questions 713-249-3193

Thanks for the info, but wasn't too sure about the chain, so took it to Patrick and M/U and they took care of it for me. Great job too. Hell of a install price, save over $50 compared to local shops. Went ahead and bought new rear tire and new Teknic gloves as well. Once again, Patrick and M/U to the rescue!
