View Full Version : Honkers behind at lights...be patient

All,
Second ride in a row, it happened again last evening in Sugar Land: I was stopped at a light going north on University, just south of highway 6. To my far left was a huge jacked up truck, far out into the intersection. I could not see to my left down the highway. So, I patiently waited for the light to change to green. On queue: another truck comes up behind me, and immediately honks. I ignored him: no response. In a few seconds, light turned and I went on my way.
The same thing happened in front of the local Krogers by my house last weekend. At light, behind a car with a disabled plate, the driver took a couple seconds after the green light to get moving. I waited. The red Mini behind me, with female, young and cell phone talking driver pounded her horn at me.
It amazes me how impatient Houston drivers can be. On top, they have no ability to visualize the situation of other drivers, particularly motorcycles, are in at hazardous intersections. We get hit, we die.
I think as the Houston summers bake, and temperatures get above 90F, that general driver impatience soars with the heat. My reaction is to maintain my poise, hold my ground, and move into an intersection only when I know it is safe. No flipping off anyone, no gestures: remain in control. Don't add to the frustration of the cagers.
Stay safe out there, and don't let anyone honk you into an unsafe intersection entry.
cheers

You think that's bad? I RARELY hear a honk.
Back home (Monterrey, Mexico) wait at any major intersection, and the honking is constant as soon the light turns green. Truly a cacophony or horns.

Sometimes I wait for people until the light turns red . I don't think its impatient for the most part, people just want to make sure that you or anyone ahead is aware of the green light. Especially when you see people EATING or doing something else. Yes, every second matters, especially in rush hour.
If they just blip the horn, that's not a big deal. If they hold the horn for more than 1/2 a second, they should be getting :thefinger:

you could try what I've done a few times, when someone behind me gets rude with the horn. just get off the bike, turn around, fold your arms and stare till the light is red again. Just make sure it's not some tough guy that's gonna get out and beat you down.

Usually, I'll freeze where I am, and look back as if i'm trying to find the honk. Honking will NOT make me go any faster.

News flash. It doesn't take a Jeep to go around people, jump curbs, or drive in the dirt.
There's things I love about H-town, so I hate to bash, but on the down side I'm convinced that the aggregate IQ in this town is much lower than other places.
On topic, there's obviously a certain mentality to drivers. People get behind the wheel and other vehicles become merely things - COMPETITION and not other actual human beings.

Know what I do when someone lays on the horn behind me?
Absolutely nothing.

Good to hear you keep your patience and cool, especially in a town with oblivious, terrible, aggressive, and distracted drivers all-in-one.

it seems to me that you get startled a little by a cagers horn?
don't let that get to you. If you do, just let it go. Don't let it get to your head, because then it gets in the way of operating and maintaining your bike, the out come could be fatal.

Lol. Nonono. I'm Deaf. As in can't hear a fucking thing. You could train horn my ass and I'd never be the wiser.
Speaking of becoming fatal...
My Deafness actually enrages cagers even further at times. They think I'm ignoring them them I'm actually not. Road rage sucks. Dammed if I do and damned if I dont...

Damn dude, I had no clue. More power to you, Its not something that should be of a problem. Road rage does suck and I hope there is a solution or something that can help you with this. Me - I get road rage in my car, for no reason :/
Its quite sad, and I don't know how to control it. I get road rage and upset while driving, over the stupidest things. Seriously, If someone is just going slow, or If i don't like the way a person is driving at a certain time of the day, I get enraged. Uncontrollably to, I try to smoke to help myself calm down, but that barely helps.

avoid anyone with a handicapped tag or plate at all costs. if they have both just pull over and wait for them to pass and get some distance between you and them.

added to Do-Want list,
You will want to find a way to string 4 or 5 of these together for the ultimate MEGA HORN!
People won't know it's you who honked... they'll be looking for the semi truck.
That deaf old geezer driving slow might actually hear you now.
Awesome

I just bought a nautilus and I'll be installing it on my KLR once my cylinder comes in. My buddy has one and I almost wet myself the first time he honked it.

I have taken a short cut in my 240sx before right off the freeway at more than 50MPH. Frinds thought it was a crazy move but it was a flat feild of grass between the freeway and feeder.
Let the honk. I was pretty worried about riding on the street so when I came to a light I would wait till at least a car or someone else pulled out before me.
One day at BW8 and beachnut I wait for the light to change. It turns and i wait for a car to pull out into the intersection first and to my left some lady in her car runs the light. If I would have gone like I normaly do then I would have been in her windsheild.

I saw the exact same thing happen at that intersection a few years ago. Explorer sporttrack took impact on front left tire and tipper over.

the horn is a sign of aggression in the states, so is flashing lights it seems.
been in s.e.asia for a few months now and driving here flashing lights and beeping the horn are as right as rain. not in angry or aggressive ways either, just communication really.

I don't see the horn or light flashing as aggressive by any means. Unfortunately, what happens when so many people hear a horn or see lights flashing, they become offended that someone would deign to suggest that the honkee or flashee might need to be reminded to pull their head out of their ass and get back to the task of driving..

i honk all the time. in fact, i'm on my second horn now in 9 years in the same truck b/c i blew the first one. :D i hate waiting... on anything.
mostly i honk at retards... not at people at green lights that don't immediately floor it. haha

I hate when you're 6 cars back and the person in the front of the line doesn't go and no one else fucking honks.
So I'm on my horn 6 cars back being an asshole...hoping the people in front of me will catch on and eventually the douche in front will hear someone.
