hi everyone... I have an 01 Ymaha R1 and drilled out a bolt to the lower fairing. That went well got the fairing off then sprayed pb lube to get the bolt off with some vice grips it turned but ony because it was breaking off inside where the bolt is. So, I tried drilling a small hole in the bolt and I am trying to pick at it to see if the peices will come out but it won't. Does anyone have any ideas? or could maybe help.....

you can get re-threading tools....it comes with a bunch of studs (re-thread holes) and bolts (re-thread studs).

get that rethread kit, drill the hole a lil bigger, as close to the old thread as possible, then use the correct re-threader, and cut through.

I there is bolt still in the hole use an eaz-out. If just a mangled hole just drill it out and retap it. or use a helicoil.

thanks guys, i was checking out the heli-coil and tap both look pretty cool, is it fairly simple to get out, I still have some of the bolt in there. So if I am following ya just drill it out and then run the helicoil or tap in there....
where would I pick these up.... sears?

sears will work. most automotive stores have the stuff as well.

fyi, its die.

u should be able to just use and ezy-out if the bolt is broken off, and you have a hole already drilled into it.

once you get the bolt out you can probably just put a new one in no problem...if the threads are a little damaged you can run a tap through it to clean them up.

you probably wouldn't need to helicoil the hole. helicoils are good for threads that are stripped. its an insert type system.

my question is how did ur bolt get so seized up you had to drill off the head in the first place??

well, i just bought the bike and went to change the oil and drain the coolant and the lower fairing bolt was stripped out. I read that when this happens you can drill out the head to remove the olt then with the rest of it that is sticking out you can get vice grips and turn the bolt out, which I did. It was coming out only because it was twisting off the outside piece the bolt on the inside remained (if that makes sense) the started to drill it out but it won't come out. I bought a dye that matched up to the bolt (bolt from other side of bike) and going to get started this afternoon with that....
as i am reading this right all i have to do is drill out the hole and then screw the die in the hole to rethread it.... right.....

Alright!!!! it is working... the screw can be pushed through the hole just a bit but it grabs the threads and locks in with no movement when I pull or try to push left or right (by hand)....
thanks witchdoctor, ownage and mad max for all of your help... i'll be seeing you on the street soon. :icon_thum
