Hey guys, I'm starting to try and eat right. I have all the right food and been doing a good job with the cravings and such. My only real question is how much Calories should I be taking in? I'm 6'2'' and 275 lbs+-. I heard you cant cut alot of calories due to your body storing Fat when you do this but you have to cut calories and burn more then you eat to lose weight. I'm confused now. Right now I'm intaking somewhere around 2000 calories a day eating 4 times daily. Does this sound right?

In order to lose weight, you should be taking in between 1000 to 1500 calories, depending on your metabolism and weight, according to everything I have read. But more important than that is where those calories are coming from, so make sure to stick with lean proteins, fruits and veggies, etc. All the healthy stuff you can manage.

I have done a bunch of research for my weight (275) and have gotten an average of 3000-3500 Calories as my Maintain (To stay the same weight). I then read that you drop anywhere between 500-1000 calories off of the Maintain Number to lose weight and keep it off. Not to fast and not to slow.
So if what I read was true, my calculation of my weight I should be intaking 2000-2500 calories a day. Of course with the proper fats, protein etc.

Wow. That is low, IMO. I maintain 210-220 lbs with around 6000/day.

3500 is a normal maintenance intake. I wouldn't go below 2500. Just clean up the calories you are bringing in. At least one protein shake a day.

rule of thumb. 2750 calories to maintain. I would drop down to about 1800 or so to lose weight. I am 6 and 210 pounds. I lost a lot of weight on p90x with a calorie intake of around 1650. you are taller so 1800 should do it for you.

2750 to maintain 275 lbs? Where did you get that figure? I would starve to death on 2750!

it's from a weight loss program I have. you would not starve to death on 2750. and anyone who eats 2750 calories a day short of body builders is eating too much.

I've been doing good on 2000 Calories a day. Not to hungry and not to full, just steadily eating small portions throughout the day. So 2750-3000 seems like a good maintain level. But I'm new to this stuff, I just wanna lose weight the healthy way lol

eat several small meals throughout the day, go easy on the carbs and totally avoid ANYTHING with sugar and it will come off. now that school is out, I will be back on my diet.

I had a dietitian put me on a 3500 cal/day diet to lose 10 lbs. I couldnt do it. I was starving. I have never taken in less than 5k/day. When I was lifting hard, it was up to 10k/day. Hell, my breakfast would take the whole day. 12 eggs, toast, 2 bananas, and 2 protein shakes.

key word in all of that is lifting. average dude doesn't need that kind of intake.

When I was lifting heavy and building mass. Now, I dont lift as often as I should. I eat 6-8 eggs for breakfast, wheat toast, a banana (if my son hasnt eaten them all, lol), and usually a protein shake. If I would cut out carbs, I would probably lose 10 lbs, but I love my taters and pasta!

I should note that I was 297 lbs when I was lifting hard. Definitely not a bodybuilder. I was a power lifter.

I've heard this too, but it didn't work that way for me. Not that I'm advising this, but I basically starved myself to lose weight. I was tired of being heavy so I cut my intake cold turkey. I went 1 day with no food which help curb my appetite, then ate 1 salad a day and that was it. I was taking in about 300-400 calories a day. I was not exercising in the beginning as it was too strenuous. Dropped about 40 lbs and started cycling and found that I had a ton of energy. Overall I dropped about 100 lbs and had a crazy amount of energy. I was exercising 7 days a week, running, cycling, lifting, and mountain biking. I've since gained back about 20 lbs but have kept the bulk of it off for about 15 years now.

Yeah, I eat. There are plenty on here that have seen me eat. Hahaha.

The thing with me is, if I cut 1000 calories a day, it really makes no difference. Maybe a couple of pounds. I am not concerned with being in contest shape, so a few lbs dont mean shit to me. I would rather eat.

Try the velocity diet, you can find it at tnation.com.

it is better to lose 1-2 ponds a week vs. 10 pounds a week. loosing weight is a life long lifestyle change. not something that should happen quickly.

lol... I didn't even catch that. 1000-1500 is good for a woman, not a man.
the problem with america these days is the need to overeat. yes, once you stretch your stomach you need more filler to "feel" full. eating less will allow your stomach to shrink again requiring less to feel full. Also, if you eat slower your body will send the full "message" at the appropriate time vs. if you inhale your food, your body sends the signal but because you are eating so fast, you end up over eating. yes, this is the kind of shit I learn in nursing school

I Workout/Run 4-5 times a week. By Working out I mean about 1-1/2 hours lifting pretty heavy weights and the Run a mile (Cause I cant run more then 1 mile without stopping just yet)
At work I'm usually active, Standing up and sitting down and walking around constantly and doing little hands on stuff a couple hours out of the work day outside
