What motivates you to get up in the morning and bang out some reps, run a few miles, or ignore the chocolate cupcake sitting on the counter?
Is it the phsical aspect of appearing better looking to the opposite sex, do you want to look better nekkid? Do the overall health benifits drive you to workout or go to the gym?
Myself, I always though of it as a way to stay healthly and look better nekkid, but that all changed durring yesterday's workout.
I always workout at night after my boys go to sleep. Yesterday morning I decided to go ahead and workout and let my boys, 6 and 4, hang out in the weight room at home with me.
I did a warm up set of flat benches with 50 pound dumbells in each hand.
I moved up and was doing sets on 80 pound flat dumbell bench presses, when my oldest boy tells me," dad you have big muscles, how come your not a UFC fighter, or a wrestler, I want to have big muscles like you when I grow up".
Last night I am tucking him in bed and he says it again," dad if I have big muscles like you can I be a super hero when i grow up?"

For me it's the difference a year makes... I gained 20+ lbs in the last year due to health issues that I THINK I'm finally getting under control. I don't like what I see when I look in the mirror everyday. I went from this photo to blah.

I don't trust those people who are always fawning over me - it's for one reason and one reason only - and they are the same dudes who throw out bait for EVERY girl, regardless of how she looks. I know their game, and I have never and will never fall for it.
I don't drool
And I appreciate it. The best guy friends I have are the ones who are NOT nice to me all the time. Regardless, I did gain 20 lbs and now that I know what caused it, I can cut that out of my diet and try to lose it. I even hired a personal trainer, but he tried to kill me... :angry7: I fired his ass. I should have known - he rides a cruiser.

I look at it like the more time you spend in the gym the less time you will spend in bed when your old. And as hard as it is, it really pays to eat right. I can tell the difference when I eat bad as opposed to eating good.
I've never had a problem pushing the plate away if I was full. I know the extra food will just be extra weight I will have to carry around and don't think its worth the money lost. I'm the type of guy that can have one or two cookies or a couple of scoops of ice cream and be satisfied.
If I had one single word of advice to anyone it's give up the sodas. I did about 6yrs ago and instantly felt better. And people wonder why diabeties is so prevalent now days.

Amazing, really. Dnix, I think has a thread on here about his transformation. I followed the P90X for about two months this past summer - I definitely got into better shape athletically. I went from barely being about to get through half a workout to being able to complete every workout, but I didn't see a change in my body. I think the diet that goes along with that program is important in the weight loss. I hit the gym and work on personal health for many reasons but here are a few.
+ In an emergency situation I can protect those that I care about without any doubts.
+ I want to grow old and healthy.
+ I'm a small guy (5'5") so I want to at possess at least average strength and size.
+ I like being able to perform physical exertions with minimal effort and feel normal afterward.
+ Build credibility and help others be healthier and happier.

After several years of working out, DIET is the key. Never eat to be full but eat to be 'not hungry'. Everything in moderation.

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to weight loss. :D
I am one of the healthiest eaters I know. For some odd reason, not changing my diet or exercise routine, I gained weight and started getting sick. I still haven't figured out what is making me sick and probably won't be able to lose the weight until I do. Some of it is just swelling - pitting edema, especially in my legs. I've had blood work, and tried numerous 'special' diets, but to be honest the very best I've felt this year was when (under my dr's supervision) I fasted for seven days.

Technically, no. My dad is a dr. He's ordered blood work and diet changes, but we can't pinpoint anything. :-/
I gained a lot of weight when I got pregnant with my daughter - stayed heavy through the next pregnancy, then when my son was six months I began my healthy lifestyle. I lost about 80 lbs and managed to keep it off until Jan-Feb of this year (nine years maintained). Now I can't do anything to lose it save anorexia, and I just don't have that in me. :D

No matter what program you're on, diet is key. If your numbers aren't in line or at least close, you won't see the results you're looking for. Basically, for weight loss, your calories in have to be less than calories out. Eat too much, and you gain weight, eat just enough and your body uses it as energy, eat too little and your body is scared it's not going to be fed and slows down your metabolism and clings to fat stores (from what I've read, though it's debated by some).

It's amazing how movie stars can transform in such a little time. I believe he got down to 110+- lbs. I'll try to find other movie star weight transformations
To a degree, yes, but then you have to factor in that they simply don't have real life issues to deal with. They basically have an unlimited bank account to hire whoever they want to tell them what do and eat and when to do it, even prepare the meals for them. Plus, that's essentially their job - all they have to do is follow their exercise/diet program without worrying about other things like work. Then of course, the motivation behind it all, is once you hit your goal and shoot the film, you get $10million.
I'm not trying to discredit their achievements and dedication, but they have certain advantages that us common folk don't.

Overall it's a good workout. I didn't follow their diet.
Eating right may be a killer for me since I can't stand fruits or vegetables. Luckily I don't have a problem with bodyfat except around my midsection. I'm sure cutting back/out the 6ish sodas and Starbucks would help that problem, A LOT. I recently found out I have an old friend from jr high that does personal training and has a lot of happy customers and he's muuuuuch cheaper than doing it at a gym. I'll probably try him out for a few months to see how I like him. If he works, then I get healthier overall for cheap. If I don't three months with him is still well under 1 month or rent for my 1 br apartment.

Those actor transformations are crazy. Christian Bale ate a can of tuna and an apple a day to loose all that weight. I bet his energy level was for shit though.
I think one of the biggest demotivating factors involve diet. You can have a killer workout plan, but if you don't change your diet you wont see results and eventually get burned out and not want to go to the gym any longer. Lets face it. If you are still eating tons of potato chips and gallons of ice cream (not saying anyone on here is, just for examples sake) not to mention all the other bad habits that us humans aquire. You will be hard pressed to see any results.

Yes. I really hate the way I look. I hate that my clothes are tight, or that I had to buy a bigger size. I hate that my face is getting round. I hate that my legs are so big that my jeans are even tight around my calves. I hate that my feet swell up so much that my shoes won't fit comfortably...
I'm pretty much done with this illness and weight gain.
I know there is not a magic pill - I do exercise and I do watch everything I eat. To be honest, I really don't know what else I can do. I guess it's true what they say about the middle age spread - I used to think they just got fat and lazy. Now I know that's not true at all.

Well, I started to try to lose weight and become healthier starting this week. I can truely say that I'm motivated by my wedding coming up in about 7 months. After reading this thread I went back and looked at some of my younger pics and couldn't believe how lazy and out of shape I am. It actually first the first time in my life made me sad to see my health. So today I started eating healthier and exercising. I must say that I feel better already just by doin the right thing. What also helped me get goin was looking thru the website that was posted earlier on in the thread with all the body transformations. So from today I have 221 days till my wedding. I'm 6'2'' 280 and hoping to get down in the low 200's by then. My fiance also is in the same boat so it helps that we have each other pushing one another. I hope to post Update info as the journey continues. Maybe even progress pics

Remember that you also have to be eating enough to lose weight. Some say that eating too little throws your body into "survival mode" in a sense, in that it slows down your metabolism and clings to fat stores as much as possible. Make sure you're getting in an adequate amount of protein every day to maintain lean body mass while using fat stores for energy.
Maybe try this out:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/guides/
That's a good start for anyone to take a look at to help understand diet and how the body works. I thought it gave a lot of insight and really helped my girlfriend learn some things.

Thanks! I typically eat meals about 200-600 calories = 1200 calories a day. It should be plenty for my height/desired weight maintenance. I'll give this site a read, though. :thumb:

I suppose my reasons for exercise differ from most. I was raised as a gymnast and martial artist from the age of 7. When some physical complications interrupted my competitive status I started to let things slide when I was about 21. Gained weight over a few years got over 190 and started to feel like shyte, plus I couldn't do most of the things I spent my childhood doing. Enough became enough, I started teaching gymnastics again and dropped 45lbs in about two weeks. I developed my own exercise regiment and got everyone I knew loosing weight in a very short period of time. Then I moved to the hill country and started working in a place that my exercises where no longer possible during the day and I didn't do them at night, the result was gaining 40lbs back. Moved back to H-Town over 2yrs after having my son and said to myself "How will I inspire my son if I am not in shape?" Regiment re instituted only in a condensed version due to work environment. 34yrs old 6' tall and 155lbs and still flippin:D My son has excelled in every physical aspect with other children his age and I'd like to think I have something to do with that!:thumb:

Miss Behave I agree that it is kewl to avoid fast food and junk temtation which is most likely responsible for weight gain in the first place, but a few simple exercises can counter most of that (to a degree, I don't mean "supersize me"). Everyone has there own flow (metabolism ((not that you don't know that)) speaking rhetorically) Blah Blah, I know that everyone here has done calorie counting and P90X with muscle confusion but I think things fail here. I agree that consumption should equal exersion for arguments sake but why not take it a step further? In stead of working out one time a day for an extended period of time, why not do it throughout the day?! When I was younger I had enough energy to spend 4hrs a night at the gym and we exercised different aspects of our body, but now I'm older. I can't keep up with a 4hr a night 5 day a week regiment! I need something to maintain my lower back arthritis and the stress fractures in my hips. I've seen everyone I know that has done P90X drop out after a few months. I don't disagree with the muscle confusion process, in fact I agree, it just takes too much time out of my day to do it their way. Break that shyte up over a few shorter workouts a day and use your own bodyweight (i.e. pushups, situps, squats, lunges, handstand pushups!)

Yes working out counters out much of the "bad food" we eat, but imagine how much faster your progress would be if you ate even better :) And you don't need to workout 4 hours a day anymore. ..just workout with me :D nowadays research is showing you can get a 30 min workout as effective as an hour workout, try Tabata training! I cant stand regular barbell squats anymore after doing them with dumbells. I feel a better burn in my whole leg using dumbells.
I will get a few heavy reps in with a barbell, but when I really want to killl my self I'll grabb a set of 110's and sling them up half cocked like I'm going to shoulder press them. I will pound out a few sets of these ass to grass.

Stay away from that shit bro! winny should not be cycled by itself, it shuts you down. My advice to you depending on how far youve come is to get some prop, run it a remaining 4 weeks, stop the winny as soon as you start the prop. Get some arimidex and run it the following 2 weeks after a week of your last prop shot....

A little thing that I learned, is that it is easier to cut body fat now and get it down before you bulk, it not you will wind up putting on more bodyfat and attribute those gains as lean mass.
I made that mistake once before. I thought fuck it, I've got a gut, might as well bulk up then drop the body fat. It was counter productive. You cna cut body fat an dbulk at the same time if you watch what you eat, lift heavy.

I have a little bit of a gut. Not really big by most American standards, but it's more than I want about 19-20% bf. I've started putting on a little bulk, but I'm no where near as big as I want to be. Right now it just seems more beneficial for me to work on growing a bit and cutting down a little later. I don't necessarily have any major goals in mind, but thinking I'll continue trying with the bulk at least into the summer, and then cut down again.
Or maybe just go on a permanent bulk. :D

its possible to gain LBM while dropping bodyfat. Its not easy though, lol. especially if youve been lifting for years

keep it up brother!
Hey Poop.
PM me, I got some questions since you seem to have a good opinion on things.
I have my group of friends who use the juice. But with everything, everyone has different opinions you know.
I already cycled Winny last year and didn't have any affects. I did try the Clenbuturol and it made me jumpy and edgy so I stopped taking it.

don't bulk if you're already 19-20% BF. fat does not like to go away.

Eh, it may be possible, but extremely difficult if so. I don't know if I have the discipline to stick to a diet that would achieve that for long. That's the good thing about being on a bulk - if I slip up and eat something I shouldn't, I don't feel quite as bad since the extra calories could be helping to build muscle :keke:

I am way short, 5'4", Any weight I gain especially lean muscle, I immediatley get labeled with juiced head, and stupid shit like that. I can put on 5 pounds and it shows big time.
There's a down side too, and half assed jack assing around and not going to into my gym for a few days, I look shriveled and weak.
Body fat has a tendency to stack up and look alot more than what it is as well.
I have learned one thing being short, my balls are closer to the ground, and the heavy weights don't have to move as far.

Eh, with the proper diet and exercise it will. Yes, it's harder to take it off than it is to put it on, but still doable. It's difficult to add any real size without taking on some fat too, so it's ineveitably going to happen. I guess it's just a matter of how much you can accept before you have to turn around and go on a cut.
I'm not planning on ever competing, and I don't necessarily want a shredded 6 pack, so I'm probably only cutting down to around 15%, which shouldn't be TOO difficult. Cutting down 10lbs (of pure body fat) would put me right about 15%. That's probably only like a 2 month effort if I keep everything in check.

I think that you could do it. If you know this much about health/exercise you can certainly change your diet to include it as a lifestyle. It's a bitch at first but stick with it and you can increase the strength of your will power.

True. That is why I'm personally just lifting. To get size. More muscle. I'll diet when i damn well feel like it. :keke:
Right now, not ready to give up my eats. I do eat decent, I just don't diet and watch what I eat.

I eat fairly well for the most part. In fact, I usually prefer the "clean" foods over other things, but there are times when I go out and don't know exactly how to count what I ate or just have whatever I'm craving at the moment. I'm more looking to get into the ball park of what my diet requirements are, but to really add lean body mass and burn fat at the same time, I'm pretty certain that you have to be really strict about your numbers 90% of the time.

When it comes to this stuff different strokes for different folks. I have never given Winstrol the praise some give it. I tried it once and it was weak as hell. Gimme the strong stuff. I can diet my way to lean muscle. Clen is crap. I have said it a dozen times. There is always a chance you got under dosed or fake Winstrol too.

Aall I can do is try to talk people out of resorting to gear as a crutch. if you can't lose and maintain bodyfat without gear then substituting hard work and effort for aas will be feable and a futile effort in the least. Get those diets in check, Lift heavy and get serious! Winny's effects are not as pronounced unless bodyfat is down below 10% it's good pre show cycle and not a mass builder like others still test should always be the staple of any cycle. Unless you like your dick to disappear for months at a time... if you want to maintain bodyfat while cutting run prop... if u want to gain mass while eating a calorie excess and not worry about water retention run a longer ester test. Again there's no reason to mess with gear unless you've been lifting for many years and know how your body responds to different diet regimens...

Clen, albuterol, t3, dnp, etc... all have there place... I wouldn't say that place is in the hands of a novice lifter. I know most wont listen to this so if any of y'all are looking to run gear do the research! Don't listen to the broscience bullshit your buddies try to pawn off. More then likely they down know shit about how aas works what it is or even how the different hormones react on receptor sites at the cellular level.

Time is my biggest obstacle. I swing weight from year to year. I'll start running and drop 40-50, keep it that way for a year or two then gain it back. All that exercise and diet is very difficult when you're married and have kids with active lives. When I was single it was super easy. Could work out any time you want and didn't feel guilty about hitting the gym instead of spending time with the kids.

definitely not. It was just an opinion guys. I believe (like anyone really cares, right??) that everyone has a "natural weight" that they carry. I'm all for being fit but not every girl is going to look like the cover of Cosmo. If you eat "normally", take everything in moderation (fats, carbs, sugars, soda, alcohol, and even exercise) then your body will form a natural weight or bmi. If you super exercise and diet, your changes will be only temporary.
Point is, embrace what you are. Exercise, eat well, be healthy but don't modify your life to be abnormal.

that would be true if people led active lifestyles, but most overeat, sit on their ass all day and get fat. This is not a "natural" thing... its a lazy thing...

No one has a genetic predisposition to be any natural weight. Your weight is a product of calories in vs. calories out and activity. Simply, your "natural" weight and shape is a product of your lifestyle. If you eat mostly processed and "snack" foods and mostly sit on the couch, then you will be natually fatter. Not because that was your fate, but because that's where your lifestyle is taking you. If you eat more whole foods in proper proportions and have an active lifestyle or enjoy exercising, your natural body shape will be leaner.
You can ask poop about that, as he's made huge changes in his life. I've seen his transformation.

well said bro. The thought of a "natural" body weight should be dismissed from your mind. Bodyfat, and muscular development is dependent on diet and physical activity. every person on this planet is a body builder. We build our bodies by what we eat and by what activities we do throughout our lives. You can build your body into fat, you can build your body into skinny. You can build your body strong or you can build it weak.
