O.K...now that I'm a veteran of one day here on the forum...I'm wondering if anyone has replaced the fuel tank on their Sportster. I have the stock 2.4 gallon tank and want to replace it. I obviously need a larger tank, but most of all--don't want the bike to look stupid. You know...little bike/HUGE tank...
Any suggestions??? I'd love to see photos of your bike with the new tank.
Gracias!!

get on ebay and search for Harley tanks and see what pops up that you like. anything is adaptable.
also, I need your stock tank when you yank it off for a project of mine:nod:

I've searched e-bay a bunch.....for one thing can't make up my mind. For another thing it's hard to tell from the photos what the tank would actually look like once it's on the bike.
They guy who's going to install the tank for me already has a tank...it looks giant. It's the kind that you mount a speedometer on it. He said it's meant to make a sportster look like a "big bike." I like the longer, more sleek tanks....but then what do I have to worry about?? My seat??
I just hate to buy something and then it turns out to be wrong.....specially if I can't return it!!!
O.K...you want my old tank....tell me more about your project.
I'm also looking for random pieces of chrome for my bike...if anyone has stuff they wanna get ride of......
gracias

the holder of the tank should be able to easily yank yours off and set the new one on and see how it lines up and how you like it. brackets to hold it permanatly are easy to make.
I would kinda shy away from the speedo tank though, cause what are ya gonna put in there to fill the hole, a make up bag, or maybe a beer koozie?
But at least you could look at it and get a size and shape reference in your mind. I looked on ebay also for ya last night and found tons and tons of nice tanks that would probably look nice. Even found a newer tank for a '04 and up that was the 4.2 gallon one off the customs.
As said before, anything can be made to fit, thats not hard, the hard part is figuring out how its gonna look on the bike and mate up to the seat well enough so it doesnt leave a huge gap or anthing.
My other project is a 98 ninja 600 that I have stripped down and am removing the upper rear frame, and the backbone and am raking it a smidgen more and will be building my own short springer front. Its low, has a mono air suspension in the rear, is going to be a mean street fighter styled bike with clip on handle bars down low, small tank and low seat and short fender. I am working a deal on an original 32 ford spare tire trim ring to cut a rear fender out of. I will fab my own exhaust also.
I have a lot of work to do yet and very little time.

Scooter your project bike sounds cool make sure you put pics out when you are done. Good luck to both of you. Barbie I also would like to put a bigger tank on my bike but I have trouble finding a tank that meets what I want.

here, check out the bike at the lower left hand corner under "full conversions. It is a sportster, but it doens't look like one because of the custom tank.
I think you can buy that tank alone somewhere. You could call these guys and ask them to order you one and then have them paint it and put it on for you.

What kinda tank are YOU looking for??
I basically want one that's at least 4 gallons and more long and sleek shaped. (I'm sure there's a more technical term for that.)

I might have a fat bob tank in the garage for a sportster, the gauges and all that fit in the tank, let me look and see, I will post up tonight. I might have some chubby pull-back bars also, I'll check.

That is what this one is called i think.
This bike doesn't even look like a sportster anymore. I like it though, it's unique.

Wow...I LIKE that!! I talked to my pm about whether to get the tank that has the place for the gauges or not. I couldn't picture how it would look--but on that bike, it looks great!
I already have that exact seat!

I am looking for 4 or more with speedometer on the tank. I think this will give my bike a unique look because of the size. Also I would like to put different handlebars. My friends tell me all the time not to put money into this bike you want bigger and I do but I still want what I want.

What size sportster do you have? If it is the smaller one then find you a 1200 tank.

I have an 883. I originally posted that it has the 2.4 gal gas tank, but I found paperwork that tells me that it's the 3.2 gal tank. What size is the 1200 tank??

All I need is 4'' riser with new handlebars, new gas tank, Cobra after market pipes, and forward control extensions and I would be set. May be a new single set would look nice.

I know that, I was yoking. I'm all about, "as long as you are riding, it doesnt matter what you ride"
Have fun with it and ride it like you stole it.
I support ya in your mission to customize it.
why not low solo seat, flat drag bars and some loud, ear bleeding pipes.

I've been whining about getting a new gas tank--I haven't made up my mind (oh, and I don't exactly have the cash right now...) but FOR SURE, this is what I DON'T want my bike to look like. Is it my imagination or does this tank just NOT go on this bike????
