HOUSTON – U.S. immigration officers have arrested more than 2,000 illegal immigrants in a nationwide sweep, officials announced Wednesday.

In a blitz that began May 26, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 2,179 illegal immigrant gang members, pedophiles, violent felons and others who have sneaked back in the country after being deported.

The arrests were the latest in a new enforcement effort announced in April by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, said Julie Myers, assistant secretary for ICE.

"These operations are the result of the secretary's interior enforcement strategy and his mandate to me and to our agency to go out and get the job done in a way we haven't done it before," she said. "I think you are seeing that in the area of criminal aliens. You are seeing that in the area of work sites and you will see that in the area of" human smuggling.

About half the immigrants arrested in "Operation Return to Sender" have criminal records, Myers said.

More than 360 were members or associates of violent gangs, including the notorious Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, she said.

Myers said most of those arrested had been placed in deportation proceedings, and 829 had already been sent home. Another 121 arrested on criminal charges were to be sent through the federal court system.

"America's welcome does not extend to immigrants who come here to commit crimes," Myers said. "ICE will leave no stone unturned in hunting down and deporting aliens who victimize our communities."

Among the more notorious criminals arrested was Angel Lira-Alvarez, a Mexican national living in Dallas and a member of the East Side Homeboys gang. He has been convicted and deported several times for drug dealing and burglary.

Asked if the operation was a result of the ongoing immigration reform debate in Congress, Myers said, "We're just doing our job. We're enforcing the laws on the books."

The day that Chertoff announced the new get-tough policy, April 20, immigration authorities raided a wooden pallet manufacturer in Houston and about 40 other cities, rounding up 1,100 illegal immigrants. While most of the immigrants were let go, seven managers of IFCO Systems were arrested.

California had the most number of arrests with 722. Texas was second with 424. In all, illegal immigrants were arrested in 34 states.

The immigrants arrested in Operation Return to Sender came from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East.

Myers said ICE would try to keep the deportees out of the United States this time.

"We will work with our foreign counterparts ... to prevent these individuals from returning. We're also on the lookout for them as well."

This is the reality of what these guys are doing.

1. Obtain a list of convicted felons that are not US citizens
2. Going to the address that they listed on their booking sheet, probation forms or other like info
3. Knocking on their door and IF they are home arresting them
4. Deporting them across the bridge where they probably cross right back and make it home before the bus that took them to mexicio does.

It's not rocket science. If they're not home, moved or actually LIED on their paperwork, they'll remain violent fugitives that are illegals that should have been denied entry into our country to begin with, or deported by our immigration here in Houston with enforcement action from lists that could be easily obtained from welfare applications, school enrollments, driver's license applications...sh*t I'm glad that I'm not running this show because I would actually get things done.

I dont think America has a problems with Mexicans as a whole, just ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. There are legalities that you go through to earn your place in america, equal oppurtunity. It may be a bitch to get your citizenship but people sit and wait patiently.

Would you like to shell out a portion of your paycheck to me? Taxes fund the government programs for the impoverished. And it would be no problem if everyone contributed, people fall on hard times. But when you have people who are not paying into the system taking out from it, thats a problem.

Coming from a third world country, you would do anything to sustain your place in america and have a better life for yourself and your family. I take the HOV lane everyday into town from the Metro thing on W. Bellfort, and i see people loitering in the parking lots and around those apartments, work is one thing, but there is also exploitation going on when people dont want to pay minimum wage to get shit done. So, they turn to the people who would do anything for money. Thats why people have unions so workers are not exploited. Which also brings down the wages of everyone else. If you can find people who work for less wouldnt you? But to what extent will you pay them for what they are worth?

Did you guys watch that video of the guy with the truck in LA? He drove over and picked up 10 or whatever for work and then drove right on into INS. (Immigration Headquarters) they all took off like a bat out of hell. I thought for a joke ok but how hard would it really be. Undercover operations will be going on all year in every state and cops are going to make great overtime. Just found out last week about these type patrols.
