View Full Version : First GSS trackday....

Today was my first time at GSS, and it was long over due. Love the track, love the turns, very techincal. Already looking forward to my next trip out there.

My Groove Union experience was great as well. Everyone was helpful and seemed to get along. Instructors did their job and rode with the level they were instructing, not trying to show off and stuff other riders.

Having a woman only port o can would be nice, since most men don't know how to us a port o can.

The track needs to be about 6" wider in the pit straight, and there's a bad rut on the backside of turn 1. I tried twice to fill it in but couldn't.

Big thanks to Tim for getting this going, Brena for putting up with tim. Also thanks to Patric with MU and John with SCR for yalls Trackside support. Look forward to seeing pics and getting back out there.

Sorry to anyone I held up, and the guy on the blue R6( I think) for almost taking you out in turn 1. False nuetral mid turn sucks ass. Lol.

Many thanks to everyone for helping to make the first GSS Groove Union motorcycle event successful. Everyone I spoke to seemed to be having a great time. Special thanks to all the rest of the instructors in the Novice group, as well as Tim, Brena, John, Patrick, Pete, "Sifu", our corner workers, Track Marshall and everyone else that helped keep the event logistics running smoothly.

The majority of folks in the Novice group were "first time" track riders, and everyone did a fantastic job! Considering it was the first GSS event of the season for many riders and the track started out a little "green" due to recent rains and cool weather, the clean riding and lack of any "fall-downs" in the Novice group was a great testament to the positive attitude everyone brought to the event.

I witnessed great progress by several Novice riders, and I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to work with y'all and hopefully convey a little knowledge and advice here and there. I'm thankful my old antique Honda hung in there all day and got around the track well enough to keep up with some of you.

I really enjoyed it as well.
Weather and track conditions were great!

I was a bit disappointed by the turn out from the local tard riders.
Hopefully they'll pull their head out of their respective ass's and get out there next time.
Big props to the nice fella from San Anonio that was killing it out there on that DR650 on stock size rims with street tires. Enjoyed watching him back that bohemeth into turn 2.

Was good seeing some old faces from MH and meeting some new ones.

Thanks to the vendors who came out.

Thanks to the guys next to me who helped me unload/load my bike, really appreciated it (can't remember your handles on here, lol)

Thanks to all the instructors! And Tim, thanks for pushing me that second to last session...I went faster than I thought I could.

I was supposed to be there, Tom, but a sick family yesterday got in the way of my plans and I had to call-in at the last minute. Next time, my friend. :thumb:

Love the track, love the turns, very techincal.

When you say "technical", what you mean is "tight", right? There's nothing really technical about GSS. It's small and tight, yes, and it can be a bit of a workout to ride on a bigger bike, but there are no elevation changes, measurably cambered corners, or seriously increasing or decreasing radius corners. Those are technical elements. The switchback T2, T3 and T4 combo is big fun, though.

Oops! Left off blind corners. None of those, either.

For a first time track rider (poolry and slowly at that) I kind of really like GSS.

I think at my skill level, an increased speed track is nothing but increased danger for me. I like the fact that GSS is a really turny (word??) track. I feel I will become a better rider on a track like this and then be able transfer that knowledge to a higher speed track.

Gozo sure seemed to get around it really well...LOL

Compared to MSRH and 3090 the only other 2 tracks I've been on, I would call GSS more techincal. But no matter what we call it it's still a fun track.

I got some pics....about 100 of them (and most of em suck cuz I'm digitally challenged). More of some, less than others. Some better than others. (GU staff, if this link needs to come down, by all means do so.)

I apologize for not getting everyone, but I tried to throw in some randoms....first priority was making sure riders were safe. :thumb:

I was impressed with the "level headedness" of riders out there. Smaller crowd, learning environment, safe passes. Makes for a much better day when you don't have to wait each session to pick up someone and their bike....so, kudos to the riders.

Things to think about for next event. Move the checkered from pit out to T8. This will get peeps off faster and get the next session rolling already. Will also keep people from "missing" it as they concentrate on T1. (or get an additional flag or two).

and both my old bikes turning laps at the track...made me smile :D (not sure how to show the image, my bad...)

About ten minutes of footage from the novice group on the third session after lunch. Godsuki catching me and trying to drag me around the track.

It was my first TD ever and my nerves were getting the best of me so forgive the slowness. You can see Godsuki at several points waving me on, showing the line, signalling for braking, and pointing out corrections to my body position. All while making it look so easy. I'll get better with folks like Godsuki, Brena, and the other instructors at Groove Union leading the way.

Mostly this will show anyone that's never been to GSS what the track looks like. Video was recorded on a GoPro HD in 720p/60fp. Youtube lost some quality in the upload, but overall not too bad. The camera housing fogged a bit in the beginning. It clears up about 80 seconds in though.

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5tifp_MJB5A&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5tifp_MJB5A&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Just want to say again how positive my experience was thanks to Groove Union and it's organizers/instructors.

Also worth a mention was John with SCRC. Great tires at a great price and the service to match.

Lastly, thanks to Patrick from MU. He completely revived my bike with a suspension tune at lunch. I had no idea how bad it was until after he fixed it. He even hung around later than he planned to get my feedback on the changes and help me out with some riding tips.

Well, the 1st Groove Union event is in the record books, and I couldn't be happier with how well the event turned out! We stayed on time, and everyone played well with others. The weather, while starting out a bit chilly and cloudy, turned to the better shortly after we got started. It was a perfect day, with perfect weather.

I want to give a huge thank you to the entire Groove Union staff. It was you guys that made this event run so smoothly. From John on the grid, to the cornerworkers (who did a fantastic job, thanks Danny, Justin, and Amanda),to my instructors. You all did an amazing job, and exhibited professionalism throughout the day. Everyone showed improvement by the afternoon, and all left with a smile on their faces. I also want to thank Stafanie for her hard work at the gate, and making a yummy lunch. To Todd and Justine, who were the voice and time of GU, thanks for keeping us on time, motivated, and helping set up.

This event just would not have gone as well if it weren't for having such great vendors on site like Patrick from Motorcycles Unlimited, John w/South Central Race Center, and Pete with Texas Track Bikes. My hat's off to all of you for not only providing fantastic services at great prices, and not just for the level of customer service that is unmatched by others, but also for your support of Groove Union Motorcycle School. You guys are the best of the best, and it's an honor to have your support.

Finally, thanks to my lovely lady, Brena. She does so much behind the scenes, and so much more in front of the curtain. How many other lady's can help put this all together, then suit up and instruct too? Thanks baby!

I want to ensure every one of you, that Saturday's success is an indicator of just how well our 1st season is going to be!

The Godsuki's Most Improved and Smoothest Rider Award for 2/27 goes to Miranda (Navajib). Although you win absolutely nothing tangible, you do get the satisfaction of getting my praise :D You did great Saturday! :hail:
Keep on riding like that, and you'll have quite a collection of TMGP trophies before you know it! :icon_thum

You should be very proud of how well you rode. You saved two high sides, and stayed in the gas the entire time! I've never had a student put their head down and gas it right after a scare like that! You did exactly what I told you to do, and lapped the whole group, on a 250 even!

Nothing says your body positioning needs work when you drag peg on a motard potentially shattering confidence for the rest of the day. I didn't have time to dwell on the fact I almost put my bike down when you just gestured "get on the gas." So I did. :keke:

And also, I didn't know how much head positioning established a more stable corner speed! Though I still didn't "kiss the mirror" all the time. I need to work on that among other things.
