english is a good idea. however, they wont be prohibiting the use of other languages or the stop translating english into other languages for those who havent learned yet.

its not learning english before you come over. its trying to force them to learn when they are here. if its the national language, it throws more incentive for them to learn. please read the link.

Is it that little known that one has to know english in order to gain citizenship classes?
from what ive see (family and friends who gained citizenship) most already know english. the interview is in english.
ratmzapa
05-19-2006, 02:27 PM
Jake you should try and get your citizenship then
TxVrod
05-19-2006, 02:29 PM
haha!!! Why did I add classes to the end of that sentence?
ixnay "classes"
Right - unless immigrants know englsh, they are told where they can take classes to learn as it's necessary for the interview and the oath.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States#Language
Although the U.S. has no official language, it is largely monolingual with English being the de facto official language, which is spoken by about 82 percent of the population as a native language and nearly everyone as a daily language. There have been moves in the past to make English the official language, but so far, this has been a minor political issue. Even though English is not the official language, knowledge of it is required to become a naturalized citizen. Several states recognize English as an official language, and three states recognize other languages along with English - French in Louisiana, Hawaiian in Hawaii, and Spanish in New Mexico. Spanish, the second most widely used language in the U.S., is spoken by approximately 10.7 percent of the population. Widely spoken languages also include other Indo-European (3.8%), Asian and Pacific island (2.7%), and just other (0.7%).[47] In total, the number of spoken languages in the U.S. is 176.[48]
Well, if we can't have English as our official language, then I vote for Zlango (http://www.zlango.com/) It's just pictures.. I always wanted to have a languge written with hieroglyphics. :icon_thum

I vote for sign language to be the official language. Things could be so much quieter and you don't have to yell. Picture messaging is fine too.
