I was sitting at the lawyer's office the other day (I know...too much fun!), and was looking at my Icon textile jacket. It is faded pretty badly from the sun (black has now turned to grey/purple). I started wondering if the sun may have broken down the fiber and lessened the protective values of the jacket. Anyone know if it will still stand up, or if I need to get a new jacket. I want one, due to the looks of it, but it is far from in my budget at this time.

Textile isnt the best already, but give it some strong tugs... its more likely to tear at a seem before the woven stuff comes apart.
And remember most roll after impact to its the initial abbrasion that you need to be concerned about.
...if it does get real bad etc and you're looking about 6 months out, I may have something to get you by you can borrow. Im more concerned your safe then trying to ride w/o.

Looks like you won't be getting a new jacket even if the almighty sun has broken down the fiber and lessened the protective values of the jacket.
So why worry?
But to answer your question. No. It's not a 2000 year old piece of linen that's been sitting out in the desert near Megiddo awaiting Armageddon. So you should be fine.:D

Yeah, I know, leather is better. Textile was cheaper, and more bearable for my yankee ass in the Florida, then TX heat. It's 5 years old now. I can get another textile Icon cheap from my nephew (brand new), but when I do get another, I would prefer leather.

Icon is crap anyway, I would def upgrade to some leather if it's faded that badly

I've gone down with a textile and although it didnt rip apart like my jeans the burn underneath was just about as bad. I still wear it because its better than nothing, but I don't expect it to do much if I go down again.

I've never dropped a streetbike (knocking on wood), so I have never field tested any jacket. (or any street gear, for that matter). I plan on being prepared for if/when it does happen, though. I found some amazing closeout deals. I just need some cash.
Found a Teknic Chicane for $89 closeout!

sure, leather is tougher on slides, and CE armor is the only way to protects against hits... otherwise, both are designed to take damage, and would probably be replaced in a major 'off' anyway, right? just depends on what features you want, and for what you need... my textile is great - heat, wind, rain, cold - I've got a liner for everything!
But sunlight-fade is probably just color fading, even though the fibers are probably fine. But I would complain to the brand about fading - you have to assume the jackets are going to be in the sunlight a lot - so it's probably just showing either cheap dyes, cheap dying process, or bad craftsmanship - either way - thanks for the heads up on the brand - Tourmeister FTW for quality synthetics!

check out CYCLE GEAR, on thier closeout/markdown rack
i picked up that scoprion jacket for something close to 40 dollars
(if i remember correctly) someone ordered it, and it was the wrong size for them. sat on the rack for 3 or 4 months.. allthough it didnt match the bike (ok post accident ...NOW IT DOES :P) thats a steal, no matter if it matches bike/helmet or not.... some times you have to make do (it was 1 size too big on me) but as you saw how everything came out :) check out the local CGs!
hell, free jacket (byt THE Chosen One! no less) right above me.
if thats the best offering, TAKE IT.. as something that reasonably fits, take it. i have learned that i f i start to question something, its always best to replace it. im not doubting the other guys comments, but if you feel safer with getting something newer/better condition than what you have, then go with it.

I've got a better question: what were you doing at the lawyers office, young man?
Honestly, though, I think that you're fine. Even though its a synthetic fiber, the fading is mainly on the exterior surface soooo I think that you're good. You could always go buy a used jacket if you really want something prettier. There's a flood of them on forums.
