Hi, I recently took the 3-day BRC MSF course at Awesome Cycles. I was wondering what would be a good sportbike to start out on that would be somewhat good insurance wise for a 16 year old boy? I have quite a bit of experience on a dirtbike and some on a kawasaki vulcan 800. Any feedback is helpful. Thank you!

depends on your body type. sit on a ninja 250 and a 500. go for the 500 if your comfortable with the weight (imagine dropping it, and having to pick it up on your own in the middle of nowhere) otherwise go for the 250. insurance doesnt get cheaper than that. unless you want a kawi eliminator 125. hehe, actually a suprisingly fun bike for what it is.

A 500 would be alright. If you can handle it do a 600 than just go for that

oh yeah. call insurance companies and ask them what your rate will be like for assorted bikes that you're looking at. you're in for a suprise
Depends on your maturity level. You can start on a 600 but the lack of experience on the street would put you at a disadvantage as things can go above your head in a hurry. (ie. NOT A GOOD THING, possily become a statistic) Now, you can get a 600 and drive it sanely while building up your skills and street smarts but it will depend on you and how you process information in that little head. I would possibly say a FZ6/SV650 would be good as it's a more comfortable "standard" type bike to ride, V-twin or inline 4... Another thing to look at is what distances you want to cover and what type of riding you want to do. Suzuki, Kawasaki, BMW and others have the Enduro/SuperMotard bikes, dual capable for dirt/street or street/track depending on the models. Lightweight, cheap, cheapr insurance, better mileage, etc. So it can be driven from the house for dirtbiking and then driven home without worries of tickets.
Awesome freaked out when anyone mentioned starting off on a 600SS or bigger, I myself can't see spending money on something smaller and upgrade from in a 90 day or less time frame. I have my F4i; not really a SuperSport compared to the R6, 600RR's, ZX6R, GSXR, or Daytona but it can handle it's own with a capable rider, a few upgrades, and HUGE balls... The body position is more upright than the other SS bikes as well but not as comfy as the SV's/FZ's.

I was looking at the f4i. My problem is I have to finance most likely, no matter what bike and then that would make me have to get full insurance. Full insurance is a problem with many bikes.

so like in '99?-03' what was honda touting as their top flite race bike?
oh yeah, it was the F4i, it only got bumped down to "sport-touring" status cuz the 600rr came out. it's still more bike then 90% of the riders out there can handle.
as for the orig. poster, since you have dirtbike experience, the Fz6 or SV is the most bike i'd recommend. and you might wanna call your insurance agent, and ask him , cuz he might dictate what kinda bike you can afford insurance wise. i had a student PAYING $6000/yr for ins. on his F4i, and he was 25, i can't imagine a 16 y.o.
Yep, replaced by the more sophisticated and Racey RR, older technology when compared to the bikes of today. Now if the RR's EFI system can be converted to the F4i....

woopee.........now 98% of the riders out there can't ride the bike to it's limits.........yeah for advancement. :eh:

Thanks guys. I am looking at the 250r or 500 ninja right now. I was told it would get boring real fast, but for me it is not about immediate pleasure. I just wanna ride and ride safe.

I actually just got a used 2004 ninja ex 250. I would recommend this bike to anyone new to riding. It is easy to handle and also powerful enough. It is surprisingly fun to ride despite having a smaller engine.

if your pretty comfortable on a dirtbike and you can sit on a 600 and feel good- then start off on the 6-- i had never ridden street before i got my 636-- as long as your balls dont grow 2 quick you'll be alright--- one of the smaller 600 i can think of if your looking for a decent bike for good price honda 600 f4i 01-03 models you can find all over the place

I have to say that shopping is kind of a fun thing. I would think a 250 would be a little small, but I'm kind of confused and the insurance for the 16y/o? Will he/she be riding the bike as well?
How much will you be riding? I Had a TL1000s, and it sat in the garage most of the time. I sold it, got a TL1000R trackbike, and a little RS50/80 for beebopping around my area. I found out the guy that bought my TLS crashed it a few weeks ago. Don't forget about what kind of gear you're going to want/need!! Gets pretty expensive, but you want to look good and be protected too!!

me and my RS50; bike has the 80cc kit. These bikes are kind of cantankerous, but a lot of fun! Sometimes I wish I had gone for the EX250 though.
