I have been locking my rear wheel up a lot. Is it just my noob reaction or should I be using my front brake more? I have riden a dirt bike before and thats how this feels. I have done this 5 or 6 times now since I have bought the bike. (2 weeks ago) Last time I did it was on I-45 doing 70 around the 59 exit. Scared me, but I am now so use to it. I am more afraid of doing an endo. Any advise on this would be cool. Don't be afraid to grab the front brake more? Is there any problems that can be causeing this? Need new rear brake pad?? :help:

that rear brake will get you into trouble bro. If you don't know how to stop, find a parking lot and practice before we read about you in the paper.

yep, too much rear brake = trouble.

I admit I have that same problem. I rarely use my front brake. I find myself using it only in emergency situations. I know it is a very bad habit. I am working on it! Be careful these guys are right it can get you in real trouble fast!

i have a an sv650s and i rarely use my rear brake. more practice and modulating the front will come natural. my stock rear brake still looks new.

dont use your rear breaks unless you have no other option..thats why you have two discs on the front you lock up you rear breaks and you will crash..i locked mine up one time on the busa and it was no fun at 100mph but i reacted quik...so yeah use more front then back try to use them at the same time but more front and less rear.....you guys be safe...the sun is out more now and cars cant see you from the sun and they will cut you off and pull out in front of you.....

:eek3:
How will you be able to stop in time in a true emergency situation? Different conditions can determine how much front brake you can use, but as long as you use it smoothly, you might be surprised just how hard you can brake with it.
One of the funnest (for me) drills that we did during the MSF course was stopping quickly using both front and rear brakes. I actually have the reverse problem. I rarely ever use the rear brake. I only ride at the track, some people use the rear, some don't. I've had to use it for my off-track excursions though. :eh:
+1 to the parking lot practice mentioned above.
My buddy and I took the MSF together a few years back. He had an accident years before.. " I had the rear locked for a while before I hit the car" is what he said. He was too scared of the locking up the front. We argued about front brake usage for a while, then took the MSF where they explained to him the general front/rear brake distribution..
Even after our arguement AND the MSF' guys explaining braking, the dummy missed the brake question on the test and still refuses to use the front. He says, 'that's just the way he was taught'
:dontknow:
Dunno how else to try to explain it to someone.

Re-read your post and saw that you mentioned only in emergency situations. My fault. Still probably a bad habit me thinks .

You are right I know! I admitted it was my bad habit! I am working on it. When I first started riding I grabbed a handful of front brake and went down HARD. That was when I broke my collar bone. So it is something I have to work on!

Typical n00b mistake, it's your muscle memory from driving a car that's making you stomp the rear brake with your foot.
Over 80% of your stopping power is in your front brakes.
As others have suggested, practice slow speed stops in a parking lot, first with the front only and then with both.
Get a feel for how much pressure to apply and what the bike is doing while you're applying it.
If you've taken the MSF than I'd highly recommend the advanced course to help you work with this skill.
I use both brakes on the street regularly, on the track I will occasionally use the rear to stabilize the chassis or to slow the bike in a straight line.
In a panic situation the shortest stopping distance is achieved by using both.

Sure, you can use only the front or rear brake and be able to stop...it's just going to take you alot longer. For maximum braking use both brakes without locking either wheel...hence if you always use both brakes it helps develop that habit for when the time comes when you do need it. Since the original post was about locking up the rear wheel...releasing the rear brake while the rear wheel is out of alignment with the front can cause loss of steering control and quite possibly a high side. OUCH! Even if you don't know what a high side fall is...does it sound like something you might want to do? Alway squeeze and press the brakes...no grabbing, snatching, yanking, stomping and practice, practice, practice. This is a life saving manuever.

I don't ride real hard/fast but I haven't been in a situation with the Busa YET where I needed front and rear brakes to stop safely. I've tried using both and can't get a feel for the rear brake.......I lock it up 9 out of 10 times.

I use my rear brake when:
I see a LEO trying to get me to pay the speed tax.
Notice my front brakes are wearing a lot faster than my rear.
Have no front brakes.
Slowing down on an incline.
Some or most good riders use the rear brake as light trailbraking in turns but I haven't a clue as to how and will learn with more experience. When using the front brakes DO NOT GRAB a handfull or jerk the lever, gently hold and squeeze... On my ATV I learned to use my front brakes due to the rears being worn metal to metal... As for why your locking up the rear brake, perhaps your body weight is sliding forward and exerting more pressure on the pedal unknowingly. (BTW: It sucks to ride on a flat spotted rear tire.)

Been driving it around town to practice braking. I am getting it. I am using more front brake and trying to use less rear. It feels much better. Though when I come to a complete stop the nose pops up about a foot or so. I will keep working on it. Thanks for all the info. My little gz250 had drum brakes in the rear. Do those not lock up as easily as disk? I only locked them up once. That was cause I hit an oil spot while turning into a parking spot and stompped on the brake. :BangHead: You guys stay safe out there.

msf teaches great braking...
Front Nose dive can be improved or eliminated with a properly setup Suspension along with quality lever control, most stock suspensions have weak springs to start with... That or perhaps your going faster than normal before slowing down.
Practice.

the amount of front brake you use determines how much rear you get to use..always useboth and get used to how much of one you can use .....individually and together.....after a while youll be able to use rear brake in a corner twithout locking it up...i dont like front brake in turns

With all the construction around town you may find yourself in someone's trunk real quick without that front brake. Or under the trunk becuase you locked up the rear.

When covering the rear brake (like in heavy traffic) I got used to leaving my toe just touching the rear brake lever. If you ride with your foot on the peg then you'll have to move your whole foot to use the brake and will tend to stomp instead of just applying pressure. Also, get used to applying the front brake first then adding rear brake.

Honestly, screw the rear brake. The only time you need it is right before you do an endo by using the front brakes. :icon_thum

the only time I really get on the rear is when trail braking through a turn or a emergency stops otherwise use your front brake and the engine to slow you down. My .02

for real man you need to take msf like a mofo. If you dont know how to apply the breaks i dout you know a lot of other things you need to know. Dang and i bet your on a brand new ss bike to huh....This is not good buddy you should park it b4 you wreck it.
by the way i used a little to much rear break on accident/ had no other choice. I had been riding for less then a month on a street bike. I was haulling ass into a corner and car infront of me hit the breaks so i did to exept i used the back a little to much ended up high siding and destryoing my pretty bike.
Sad part was i new what i was doing i just ****ed up when i went halling ass into that corner.

I recomend you go and have Patrick @ M.U. set up your suspension. This will give you much more confort in using the front breaks witout such harsh reactions.

This is not a brand new bike. I am the third owner, and this is my second bike. I know I am not a perfect rider but I am not new. I have a lot of hours on dirt bikes and on my first bike. I had to take the msf cause I am still a minor. And I learn new things everyday. I have a Sv650s. Its not like a cbr rr or something. It has just been a few months since I have been on a bike. I am getting a hold of things now. I was just timid of the front brake and needed more engine braking. I wear gear nomatter how hot it is. Thanks for all the comments and rants from people. :dance:engine braking during an emergency isn't the thing to do. get used to the braking potential is what you need to do. practice practice practice.........the ft brake will save your life. if you know how to use it WELL.
