IRVING - An Irving teen-ager accused of trying to rob a man at gunpoint Wednesday night was shot by the victim in a parking lot of an apartment complex, police said Thursday.
The 16-year-old remained in intensive care in critical condition Thursday at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, police said. The teen suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
The man was not injured, police said. Police declined to identify the man or the teen.
No other injuries were reported in the shooting that occurred about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 9400 block of E. Valley Ranch Parkway.
The attempted holdup victim, a 45-year-old Irving man, told police that he was sitting in his pickup truck in the parking lot, talking on his cellphone, when the teen walked up. The teen - armed with a semi-automatic handgun - demanded the man's cellphone and wallet, police said.
The man told the teen he would give him his wallet and acted as though he was going to get it, but instead grabbed a larger caliber revolver that was lying on the seat, police said.
As he pushed the teen's gun away, the man shot the suspect, police said.
The teen spun around and ran away, police said. Fearing that the teen would return, the man drove away from the complex, police said.
A few minutes later, residents found the teen, without a handgun, sitting on a curb near the apartment complex office, telling them he had been shot, police said.
The teen was transported by ambulance to Parkland, police said. As the teen was headed to the hospital, the man called police to say that he had almost been robbed at the apartment complex.
The man drove back to the complex and gave police details of the attempted holdup.
Because the teen did not have a handgun when he was found, police searched the complex and discovered it a few hours later.
"At this point, we believe it was self-defense," Irving police spokesman David Tull said.
The teen is expected to be charged with aggravated robbery, Tull said. The shooting case will be turned over to a Dallas County grand jury for consideration, Tull said.

it's good that the table was turned on him. maybe he'll think twice before trying to rob someone else.

Sucks to be him. Funny how people think in this world. Sometimes we learn the hard way but, I have found that usually just asking for something will get you better results then taking it. :dontknow:

Let me get this straight. A guy is sitting in his truck in a dark parking lot late at night with his gun on the seat and talking on a cell phone. A young punk thinks he has money and trys to rob him.
Why do I think there is more to this story? The words "drug deal gone wrong" keep coming to my mind.
Wrong place wrong time and bad luck for the perp, easy money worth a life?

Don't get me wrong. The thief got what he deserved, but I suspect the shooter was not totally innocent.

Hard for me to comment on the victim or the squid since I was not there but, had I a gun stuck in my face, my reaction would have been the same. Anything it takes to protect my family and me. What wou you do?

No, you're right about that but, with some respect, it's very diffiicult to have sympathy for him. More than him, I have sympathy for the parents - but only because they have to see their son hurting.

100% agreed.
I x-posted the article to another forum... where it got delete by an over-zealous moderator.... but I think the most powerful statement I could make there was that discipline starts with the parents. That's too hard to argue.

well, at least he is still alive, maybe he will change his ways after his GRAVE mistake. cant blame the shooter, I'd horizontally ventilate him also if the gun was on me.
recently I had a youngster try the same crap, only reason he is still alive is due to the fact he was smart enough to keep the pistol hanging out of his shorts, not actually drawn on me. we both get to live another day because of it.

sad but probably true, this *****fied liberal world will somehow find fault with the shooter in a civil court and make the thug a wealthy fellow.
our society sucks massively

So it is wrong to be happy that a thug got hurt? Too bad he wasn't killed... That would make me happier because it would be one less punk on the streets to harm my family and I.
