View Full Version : Starter Street Bike Opinions

Greetings Ya'll,

I'm the noob on the block for the moment looking for some opinions. I've been off a bike since Katrina washed my old dirt ride away, and I've recently been itching bad to get back in the saddle. I think I am going street this time since I've no truck anymore to get a bike to the track/trails.

I digress. My background is on dirt starting when I was 11 and did it steady about 9 yrs. Went from 100 to 350/400 thumpers (4 stroke). I also rode a bit on street w/ my uncles honda shadow 750.

Now I respect the opinions of those who know since I do not. I am swallowing the bitter pill and steering away from an SS for now. That said, what about a used Yamaha FZ6? There's a few in my area in the $3500-3000 used range w/ low miles.

Again, I know...a detuned R6 engine is still an R6 engine. Does the riding position, wider bars, and better low/mid-range make this more suitable? I've heard differing things on this. I am trying not to overestimate how my prior dirt experience will carry over to the street. Whole new world, however, I do like to think I had enough smarts pounded into me when first twisting a throttle way back when to keep it sub 8000 rpms for a "break in" tho.

Anyone own one with some incite? I have back up bikes in mind like GS500F's and SV650's, etc. Just fishing for some info.

Domo arigato gozaimasu!

1200 Bandits are nice, plenty of power to keep you from growing out of it, and they run on regular.

one of the MH members has one for sale

probably better to start on the Fz6 than a 600 sportbike... search here and google and you can find some good threads. You could definitly do worse than the Fz6, they're solid and have plenty getup-go.

Position (sitting) is closer than to what your used to with the dirt bikes and cruiser than a sportbike too.
Put a nice chunk of mileage on myne before an SUV tried to eat it.

When you take your MSF class to get your license, ask your instructor at the end of class what they think of the FZ6 for you. It sounds like with your experience, you'd probably do fine on it, but it's a little difficult to say without actually seeing you ride first. :thumb:

my fz6 is my first bike, super easy to ride and very comfortable sitting position, easy to handle power. i had no experience on a bike or 4weeler and was able to get comfortable on it fairly fast and still love riding it over a year later. ive sat on other bikes but i prefer sitting up on the fz and as said plenty of power and a good stable bike.
(Im going to be selling mine soon baby on the way and need a car),

With as much experience as you have (even if it is on dirt) you should have NO problem with an FZ6.

Thats what I was thinking. Starting on dirt (in MY opinion) saved my :moon: a few times. Biggest thing to remember is that your front break is your friend, lol.

What is your riding style? What do you like to do? Are you thinking of going on the track? There are sooooo many questions left out there.

My riding style? Hmm...being that I've little road experience I can't say really. I suppose being a dirt rider for so long I'm most comfortable in a more upright position if for no other reason than it's what I am used too. I live the rush and testing the machine and my abilities so if I can find a road track near Baton Rouge (where I live) than I'll most likely make my way out there.

Eventually I want to move up to a SS and do more track oriented riding to get my adrenaline fix. I figure the FZ6 would be a good transition bike for me having the position which I am familiar to gain experience/skill on pavement, and the engine of a SS to somewhat familiarize myself w/ what to expect in terms of power and response.

By the way, I am looking to get a loan to buy the bike and equipment. Most large banks aren't lending for cycles/rec vehicles. The local LSU credit union offered the terms and sum I wanted at 9.25%. Any opinions on that? Anybody know where I can do better? I have the funds do buy it all out right but would rather not let go of that chunk of change all at once.

umm negative.. I had a sv650 for my first bike and now I ride a 636 and love it. Don't know how you grow out of a bike? I know there's people out there that can smoke liter bikes on the track with a 600 you don't need a liter bike unless you want one just for a little more speed most new 600's are just as fast as 1000's. So what your saying if he gets a liter bike then if grows at of it he should jump to a busa or zx-14 makes no sence what about after that?

I say sence you have experience from dirt that's great that will help you a lot in the streets with being aware, reaction time and not panicing. So go with a bike that you enjoy test ride diffrent bikes thats the only was you'll find what bike is right for you and that you like!

:eek3: Oh really?

Yeah, I mean, I don't see the problem in suggesting a liter bike for a guy's first street bike

I think you'll be fine with your prior background. Its all up to yoou how you control yourself and the bike.

I rocked a 600SS for a first sportsbike. Had a couple of cruisers before.

O wow.. :-/

I would like to recommend an SV650 or ninja 650. I started with a Ninja 250 did a trackday and loved it so I got something more oriented for it but something I could still take off and cruise to San Antonio or some other all day trip andnot have any problems so I got the SV. And if you want the SS look the fully faired SV's look pretty badass imo. :thumb:

And if you decide to go to the track(and it sounds like you're interested in it) the sv is right at home there. And it's even more fun blowing by tards like that up there ^^ that watched torque and biker boyz one to many times on your underpowered V-twin :D

As a matter of fact I may be listing mine up for sale in a few days if you're interested. Might be snagging a VFR that I just can't get out of my head

With the experience you listed throttle response should be easy for you. I suggest sitting on different bikes to see if you like the ergonomics. Ergonomics can make or break your opinion on the bike.

I started on the 250 and I'm really itching on getting a bigger bike already. :(
