Ormand gets AWESOME!
by Ormand
So as some of you may already know, I have been interested in getting a bike now for a while. Well, having been a member of the Motohouston Community for over 5 years now, I knew that there was no way I was getting a bike until I completed MSF. And from the MH Community and friends, I knew there was no better place to complete MSF than Awesome Cycles :thumb:
Signed up for a Thursday/Friday class intentionally on a hot week so I can get the "true experience" of motorcycling lol. The instructor of our class was very laid back and spoke less out of a book and more from real world experience, which was greatly appreciated. For those who have not completed MSF, some of the class is indoors reading and watching videos, but the majority of the class is spent outdoors on a bike. I found the classroom information from the book, instructor and videos interesting and practical, but most importantly, "to the point". Outside, we get a wide choice of motorcycles to choose from: sport bikes, cruisers, etc. Awesome Cycles had 3 Ninja 250rs, which is a great bike for beginners to learn in. In fact, I believe Awesome Cycles is the only MSF course in Houston to offer sport bikes. This is *critical* if you are in the market for a sport bike, as was I.
I have never ridden a bike before...ever! So naturally, taking a course with others was a bit intimidating but I never felt that way at Awesome. The instructor was very laid back and the environment was conducive for learning. We performed a variety of tasks on bikes, including learning how to mount and dismount, turns, weaves, u-turns, braking, running over a peice of 2x4 and other "real world" events on 2-wheels. What better way to learn these things than in a controled environment with others who are in the same boat and an experienced instructor. And if you drop a bike, no worries! (one student in my class dropped a bike a few times)
After completing the course, you take a quiz and if you pass, WHALAH...you have completed MSF which makes you eligible for insurance discounts, bypasses a riding test when taking your M-Class license exam, but most importantly, you learn basics of motorcycling that will save your life and your bike. I can't imagine going out and buying or riding a bike without taking MSF first. That's just asking for trouble.
So after I completed my exam and passed, I got a bunch of cool shit...
10% Off Entire 1st Purchase @ Cycle Gear...I used this on $1400 of gear!
Discounts @ Motorcycles Unlimited...going to use this for motorcycle setup
DPS Book to study for the M-Class Exam
Other safety books and manuals
Stickers, Pendants, Patches...

...And your certificate of MSF Completion you can hang proudly to let everyone know you did it the right way.

I enjoyed the course and would *highly* recommend it to anyone who rides but hasn't completed it yet, or even for people who are mildly interested in riding a bike or learning a new skill. I live in Galveston and drove quite a distance in traffic to attend Awesome Cycles MSF so that says something about the quality of MSF and Awesome Cycles.
See you all at ERC (advanced riding) in a few months :hello:
