Alright, I started working out 2 weeks ago. I'm 6'0. 230. I want to get down to 195. I know eating right is an important part of losing weight and so is working out which I am in the process of doing.
Does anyone here take any pills or drink a diet supplement drink. What works? I usually eat 3 hard boiled eggs in the morning and a glass of OJ. Have a lunch(sometimes) and a good dinner. I usually don't snack during the day and I was told to eat some fruit throughout the day.
I'd like to at least drop 30 lbs by the end of the year. Or at least lose my stomach. I'm not really that fat, but I'd still like to be more slender than I am. Even if I can drop 20 lbs I'd be fine with that.
Btw, I'm not weight lifting. I'm doing 250 push ups. 100 chin ups and 200 bar dips everyday.

I'll stick to the credit game.
Btw, I'm playing 4 games tonight. Should be fun.

I had the same goal - loose my gut.
I've been doing Medifast. Its not fun. It takes some discipline, but it's simple and it WORKS. 5 meal replacements (a shake, bar or soup every two hours) plus one "lean and green" meal which is usually 6-8 oz of lean meat with 1.5 to 2 cups of vegetables.
Today was the end of week 6. I've cheated from time to time, but not very much. I've lost between 19 and 20 pounds as of this morning. That’s 217 down to 198 in 42 days.
Be aware - this is not for those who are trying to work out heavy or involved in a lot of high energy activities. There simply aren't enough calories for that. Now that I'm leaned out, I'm starting to add back in select carb and protein calories while doing strength training.
Food is about $300 a month - but when I consider that I cut out eating lunch at 7- 12 bucks a day, it was pretty much a wash.

I am 5'11" 150. I eat one meal a day, dinner. I eat total crap, lots of fried chit. My cholesterol is perfect. I am on BP meds but just barely. I drink scotch and water from the time I get home at 5:30 until I go to bed at 11:30. I sleep six and a half hours a day on the average, due to my busted back. If I did this: Btw, I'm not weight lifting. I'm doing 250 push ups. 100 chin ups and 200 bar dips everyday. I would have an aneurysm and drop dead! Good luck with your goal.

You need to train.
calories < calories burned = weight loss
find a diet and stick to it.
30 lbs in less than a year is not reasonable goal for your stats. (yes there are exceptions but you will be losing water and muscle also, which is not healthy)
Set an attainable goal for the year.
Try to avoid simple carbs, escpecially late in the day.
Train Train Train.

Just workout at least 4 times a week. Do push ups and sit ups every morning. I've got a got a 4pack right now but thats cuz I do 500 sit ups a day. Before Med. School when I had a six pack I was doin' 1000 situps a day and workn out 6 times a week. Diet is important but so is supplementation. Make sure you get some quality whey protein and eat alot of fruits and take a mulit-vitamin everyday. good luck man.

I'm not technically overweight, but I just keep getting softer and softer as the year goes on. I'll be back in the gym full time starting the end of Aug. with a trainer. There has to be a better way to get old. :keke:
On the plus side, I am the healthiest person I know. I even get super low ins rates, because of my health.

Forget the supplements/drinks/bs.
Cut out soda, beer, fast food, chips, etc. Eat proteins and veggies. Keep carbs in the diet, but dont load up on them. Balanced meals.
Along with your pushups, situps, squats, do some cardio. You need to get your heart rate up and keep it there for at least 15 minutes. You can run, bike, skate, something.
I was 235 back in 2006 and walk around at 180-185 now and compete at 170-173. Now that I've lost the weight, I can "cheat" now and then and my grappling workouts keep the weight off.
Take it for what it's worth. Experienced this first hand.

I have to take issue.
I agree that calories burned > calories consumed will result in weight loss. While training is one way to reach his goal - it is not the only way. In fact, diet often produces better results for some individuals than fitness. I happen to be lucky enough to have both work - but for the last 6 weeks I have been dedicated to this diet program.
I have not lost any muscle mass according to my body fat measurements. I am not dehydrated - water consumption for me is 2 liters a day. I do not train super hard on minimal calories, but I do a P90X workout 2 to 3 times a week. I am still building muscle. The plan allows you to pack on the protien if you want.
The program has also trained my brain on how to approach food - for example, what portions are actually needed instead of "cleaning my plate".
Medifast is right on the edge of minimum calories - but they are very balanced calories. Nutrition is not compromised.
This plan works - period. It was developed by doctors at the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Clinic and is widely accepted by doctors.
Weight loss of over 100 pounds in a year is common. (Obviously - these numbers are from people who are morbidly obese, not people looking to lose 30 pounds BUT it works just as well for those like me looking for that 30 pounds.) Why not get it done fast? I'll be done with this in 2 months and heading to Hawaii ready for the beach Sept 3rd.
Like I said before - I've lost 19 pounds. My wife has lost 14. In 6 weeks. I'm enjoying a "nilla" shake as I write this.
I am not tired - have plenty of energy. Nothing about this plan has been unmanageable. Just depends on how bad you want results.
I will have another 2 percent body fat gone by the end of the month and will have another 12 pounds gone by the end of August.
The other thing this plan makes you realize is how much crap you actually feed your body in a day. A Shipley’s doughnut doesn’t have that many more calories in it than a biscuit from KFC – but look up the amount of fat – you will be amazed. That is the best part of this system – my brain is re-trained on how to eat and how to be healthy.
If you're more into the training half of the equation, then P90X also works - but you have to be just as disciplined in that. 6 days a week. But you can easily lose that gut in 90 days. You might not lose 30 pounds - but that will be because you gained a bunch of muscle mass - not a bad thing.
Good luck – you can do it. All you have to do is make the choice, take it seriously and stick to it – regardless of what route you take.

Look I agree with most of your statements above. However, any "program" that has you losing a large percentage of your body weight in a short period of time will not last. One you don't have the discipline to keep the diet/training up. Second, you are putting yourself in a catabolic state. Your are losing muscle mass and fat. Now if it is more important to lose size for medical reasons; then they muscle loss is an accepted compromise.
In regards to training I was referring to anything form of exercise, that raises your heart rate. walking, weightlifting, karate, yoga, etc.
I believe the any successful diet/training is a lifestyle change. Once you incorporte those in your life then you don't have to worry about fluctuating weight up or down, and if you do its on your own terms.

Yea, since I've started working out, I feel a bunch tighter, but the freaking gut has to get out of here. It's not like I have a big gut, but I have one to say the least. Just want to lose it. I'm a 38 pant size now(they fit loose). Can't wear 36 cus they are too tight. I'd like to get down to size 34. That is my goal.

And I don't really eat alot of fast food. I do eat alot of sweets at home tho. Ice cream, candy, you name it.
Other than that, I usually eat a good dinner. Home cooked. Usually chicken, fish, green beans, taters, red beans. Stuff like that.
It's my lunch I usually pass up. Bkfast now is the eggs and OJ. Fruit during the day will help. I only like bananas, oranges, and grapes.
It's just hard to snack on vegies right now. We have tons of them. I just grap the cup cakes instead. lol

I know right. Well, what started me on the downside was when my girl got pregnant. I was a tad under 200 then. Well, I stayed up till 2 am every freaking night eating ice cream and little debbies. Then it just snowballed. Quit working out, blah blah blah. I was a lazy fuk for a good 2 years so. Went from a size 33 to 34 to 36 and now i'm at 38. If I hit a 40 pant size someone blow me away with a shotgun please.

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm#
I calculated your daily calorie intake to be about 2100 for weight loss. So this is going to be very inportain for you in order to loose weight and keep you calories at something managable. I use fitday.com to track everything. And by everything I mean dont cheat hold your self to that candy car and coke you had for a snack!
I would start some other kind of physical activity as well, at least you are diong something but work your way into some more weight lifting and cardio if you can. (hint tighter you diet the less cardio you need!)
Also depends on how far you want to get into it but fitday will also track your macros protein/carb/fat intake. I would start of with a 30/40/30 ratio. More info on that here http://build-muscle-gain-weight.com/how-much-of-what-to-eat.html
Also I agree with the forget the supplment statement. Aznhero he is not working out enough to need any extra protein at the moment and it will not make his workout worth more at this point. Now if he gets into more weight lifting then yes but now I would suggest save your money and work on the new eating bc that will be hard enough.
I also do not agree with the diet shakes. Thats great that its working for you and you enjoy it, just saying I dont find that its a reasonable way for most people to live and stick with. Also I dont think its something that you can maintain for long periods of time. Did a little research and found that its a form of ketosis diet which is an accepted diet but I would eat normal food instead of all the subsutite stuff plus 800-1000 calories(from what I read thats what the diet puts you on) is not enough to maintain for long periods of time.
I would start of by tracking everything that you eat on fitday and then looking to see how many calories you are eating along with the macros. Also I would suggest eating 6-7 times a day. Its hard at first but now every 2-3 hours I am hungry you just have to get over the first week or so feeling like you are stuffing your face every couple of hours. As far as eating fruit all day I wouldnt, but that just me. Its a lot of carbs and sugar (although it is ok for you it just doesnt fit in most of the time when you calculate everything out). Try yougurt and cottage cheese with a little fruit mixed in that way you rae getting you crab and protein!

Good advise. I do, do some cardio. I play softball 3 times a week. So thats a minimum of 6 games a week. I know that isn't like running 2-3 miles a day, but it's something. I'm not big on weight lifting either. I can get cut just as good doing push ups, chin ups, and dips. I know, I was locked up for 15 months. Seen it done time and time again. Besides, I don't feel like working out with 100 other 'dudes'. lol.
I think my diet has to change and I know this ain't happenin over night and I"m cool with that. Just need to lose some weight that's all.

Yeah. So? You suprised? LOL
I know most people are. WHat everyone has always learned is 1200 calories or so for a diet. And how long do you ever see anyone stick to a diet like that? That info is basically crap!
Your body needs more than that to just sit there in a resting state. So feed it and you will be suprised you will loose weight as long as its not empty calories (100 snack packs=total crap) and its something your body needs it will respond.
Also its a lifestyle change. At 2200 calories this is acutally something you can maintain a live with not just something that will have you starving and irratiable and then make you want to quit in 2 months, or 2 weeks like me. LOL. Also ever wonder why things always say based off of a 2000 calorie diet? Yep that cause thats around what you should be eating :thumb:

For the most part. It's my eating that I need to change. More water intake too. I only drink about 4 bottles a day. I need to double that.

burning calorie wise the situps and leg lifts are good and for strengthening/building muscle in the torso... In regards to these excersizes reducing fat in the area and "slendering the waistline" this isnt the case. these excersizes dont "spot reduce" the fat in the area... they are simply increasing muscle mass/strength and burning calories. You're body will lose the fat where it wants and everyone is different. this guy could do 1000 situps a day and keep all his fat in his midsection and lose the fat around his arms and legs, who knows...

Well the numbers tell a different story. If you maintain enough protein in your diet, the muscle loss will be minimal if any. My numbers this morning are:
20.5 pounds and 9.5 to 10% body fat down in 43 days.
9.5% of 217 is 20.6 pounds. I am maintaining my muscle mass. And I could continue this into the "maintenance" phase of the plan indefinitely.
As I get down to my goal (around 185 - so 12 more to go) I will add back in some more select carbs (not sugar or processed food) and then hit a 3 to 5 day per week strength training routine.
I agree - some people won't be able to do it and will rebound. I guess they don't want the results as bad as I do. It's not difficult, it just requires a goal and discipline.
It took me about 5 years to gain this 30 pounds. I'll have it gone in 8 weeks and have my body and mind trained to behave differently. Food tastes different now. I can slow down and enjoy it. Most people (myself included) are used to having the next bite of food on their fork before they have even swallowed the bite they just took.
Simple advice – cut the sugar and pay attention to your fat intake. Drastically minimize anything fried. Stop drinking soda. Don’t drink as much alcohol. While some beer may not have very many calories, alcohol slows down the fat burning process. Change your lifestyle a little, and you’ll see slow steady results. Change your lifestyle a lot, and you’ll see fast results. I am losing .48 pounds per day. Yeah – if I went and started eating candy and pastry and drinking coke and a half of a pizza for dinner, I’d gain it all back quick. I choose not to do that. Welcome to size 33 jeans.

:notworthy::notworthy: Congrats to you, too!
Losing the weight is only half the battle. Then you have to keep it off... I've managed to maintain a 70 lb weight loss for about seven years, now. It took me nearly three years to lose it, though. :thumb:

Sounds about right. I don't drink Cokes. I don't drink alcohol. I do like tea, but loaded with sugar so I'll have to quit tea altogether. I do like pasta and read you need to stay away from that. I can eat Tuna out the can all damn day so at least I have that going for me. I can do without Pizza. I rarely eat it anyways. Bread, don't eat much bread either. I guess I gained weight over the past 3 years by being lazy and eating a bunch of junk food. If I eat better and continue to work out, I'll be alright. I went from 185 to 230 in 3 years so.

Yeah - you'll find what works for you. I don't deny that a slow steady approach works best for most people, but I find that I can be extremely disciplined for short periods of time, but over the long haul, I'll become more lazy and life will get in the way somehow.
That website that tracks your calories is a great way to see what you actually eat. I was amazed. That is sometimes enough to change your habits right there. A trip to Cici's will blow your mind. 6 or 8 slices of pizza. 2 or 3 deserts. 3 coke refills. 2000 calories later... go figure.
And don't be too hard on pasta. Be more careful about what kind of sauce it's floating in. Whole grain pasta is a good source of complex carbs if you're going to be working out hard.
Good luck man!

See, that was what I was doing. For the most part. My gf is Betty Crocker and our dinners are always off the hook. It's what I was eating for bkfast(pop tarts, cereal, ice cream, lol) and lunch. McDonalds or some crap like that. Not to mention during the day I'll grab another ice cream out the freezer, snack on some Hershey bars, you get the drift.
I work out the house so my sleep pattern and life schedule is off. I wake up at 9. By the time I actually get the cogwebs out, it's 10 already. Too late for me to make a bkfast. So, I don't eat or I'll grab a pop tart or something. Most times I bypass lunch all together and just wait for her to get home to cook dinner so. Now, during the day, I do snack, but it is on junk food. And if im out and about, i'll stop and grab a bite so. Yea, i know it adds up. I stay up till 2 am. So dinner has worn off. Now, i'm back in the freezer again getting an ice cream cone or some kind of sweet. Add all that together without working out. Shoot. No wonder I'm a freak.

I love to cook and eat, so I know what you mean. My schedule is very similar - I'm a realtor and work from home many days.
One thing to think about is how you manage your metabolism. Think of it as a furnace. You have to stoke that thing in the morning and add fuel every couple of hours. You want it to slow burn all day long without "dying out". 5 smaller meals every 2 to 3 hours. You don't want it to crash.
For breakfast, I like this: 2 to 3 cups of egg beaters scrambled with a cut up turkey sausage patty. A little low fat cheese or spoon full of salsa. Egg beaters are very low fat and no cholesterol. Turkey sausage is low fat. The whole thing is packed with protein. And very yum!
The only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficiency - whether through burning more or taking in less or a combination. One pound is equal to about 3500 calories. So if you reduce your daily calorie count by 500 (either by eating less or burning more or both) then you stand to lose about a pound in 7 days. Do the math from there. 500 is no big deal. Eliminating 1000 calories isn’t even that hard. That will give you 2 pounds per week. You’ve got the desire, so I have no doubt you’ll do it.

In anotther life I was in decent shape.
I found that situps while holding a weight on your chest helped the stomach, but had to do leg lifts to get rid of the lower part.
To lose weight if you monitor it you can see your goal arriving and it helps motivate you.
Consider:
Putting a scale and a calander in front of the fridge.
Weigh your self every morning and evening and write it on the calander.
and check what the scale says everytime before you open the fridge.
it makes you think about it.
If you toss the health issue a bit to the curb you could replace some meals now and then with a Red Bull and a Cigarette.
Good Luck
